The Gambino crime family first emerged in New York in 1906 and was led by Carlo Gambino during the McClellan hearings in 1963 that exposed organized crime. The Gambino family operated throughout the US from New York to California and was one of the most powerful crime families. Carlo Gambino was boss from 1957 until his death in 1976, after which Paul Castellano led until he was assassinated in 1985 outside his home. John Gotti then became boss but was convicted of murder in 1992 and died in prison 10 years later.

The Gambino family first appeared in the “mafia scene” around 1906.
The group is named after Carlo Gambino boss of the family at the time of
the McClellan hearings in 1963 when the structure of organized crime first
gained public attention.
This crime family was throughout the whole country from New York to
California, and considered one of the most powerful crime families.
4. CARLO GAMBINO A.K.A. DON
CARLO (1902-1976)
Years as Boss: 1957-1976
Born in Palermo, Sicily
He first became involved with the Castanello family as a rum
runner and then once that operation was broken up he worked
for Vincent Mangano.
After Mangano disappeared he became underboss for Albert
Anastasia.
Then, after Anastasia died he became the Boss for the
Gambino Crime Family and remained boss until he died of
natural causes in 1976

6. PAUL CASTELLANO A.K.A. BIG
PAULIE THE BANKER
Was born on June 26, 1915 in Brooklyn, New
York.
Became the Boss of the Gambino Crime Family
after Carlo Gambino died.
He became involved with the Gambino family
after marrying Carlo’s sister in law.
He was gunned down outside of his Staten
Island home on December 16, 1985.

8. JOHN GOTTI A.K.A. THE
DAPPER DON
Born on October 27, 1940 in Bronx, New York.
By the age of 12, Gotti was working as an errand boy
for an underground club in the neighborhood run by
Carmine Fatico.
In 1992, Gotti was convicted of 13 murders and many
other charges and was sentenced to life in prison
without parole. He died there 10 years later.
