The defining asset of every leading technology company is talent. At Balderton, our job is to provide capital to support European technology companies to attract and retain world leading talent and get the best out of them. As a result, we’re fortunate to have learnt a lot about what it takes to identify, attract and retain people from the teams we work with.
In this report, we’ve set out to identify where people working in European technology companies come from, what experience they have, and what they expect in their roles. We did this by profiling almost 15,000 employees in over 1,000 venture-backed companies in Europe, and by working closely with a select group of recently backed start-ups.
If you are a startup and looking for connections, guidance, mentorship? Leading global accelerator Startupbootcamp is here to help you.

Introduction by Summit President & Vice President
The digital revolution is increasingly challenging
banking and insurance services, an industry that
only a few thought could be transformed until
recently. Disruptive investments are now targeting all
businesses such as payments, remittance, private
banking. Giants such as Intel, Facebook, Apple,
Samsung, Ebay, Google are also entering the
space. It is obvious that M&A will soon complement
the initial investment phase. In 2014 more than $12B
were invested in fintech start-ups but concentrated
in the world’s largest financial markets with roughly
60% of VC investments in the US, 30% in the UK
and a mere 10% in the rest of the world. In this
context, we are very much looking forward to
bringing together in Paris Europe’s leading
investors, entrepreneurs and financial services
executives.

3. $12 B invested in 2014;
Whilst UK dominate Europe’s fintech investments, the rest of Europe is
showing promise in Nordic countries, the Netherlands and Germany;
Some of the most active early stage fintech investors since 2012
include: Google Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Spark Capital, Accel
Partners, Lightspeed VP, Khosla Ventures, Index Ventures (Europe),
Kima Ventures (Europe), Atlas Ventures, NEA, General Catalyst
Partners;
Some major banks and insurers such as Bank of America, Citigroup,
Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, Santander or Axa are not sitting on the
sideline as they invested in 10s of companies; and
M&A battle will follow this investing phase with giants such as Google,
Intel, Mastercard, Citigroup, Apple, Samsung, American Express, eBay,
and Amazon.
