Fronts are collisions between different air masses. The students conducted experiments using oil, water, and food coloring to model warm and cold fronts. Warm fronts occur when warm air moves into cold air, while cold fronts happen when cold air advances into warm air. They also learned about stationary fronts, where colliding fronts are unable to move past each other, and occluded fronts, where a cold front overtakes a warm front. Through their investigations, the students observed how fronts cause changes in weather and climate that allow different environments to sustain life.
