Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) was launched in 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Mahatma Gandhi's birthday to improve sanitation in India. SBM aims to make India open defecation free by 2019 using a multi-pronged approach including community participation, flexibility in toilet options, capacity building, and broad engagement.
