Introduction
• Friedel –Craft acylation involves the formation
Of new C-C bond between a benzene ring & an
acyl group .
• This means that in friedel –craft’s acylation
reaction when benzene reacts with acyl
chloride (acetyl chloride) in the presence of
Lewis acid catalyst, it gives acylbenzene
(acetophenone)

Step 1: Formation of acylium ion
Step2: Attack of the alkyl cation on the aromatic
ring
Step 3:Proton transfer regenerates the
aromatic ring
