This document proposes integrating sustainability and ecoliteracy principles into K-12 education through an inquiry-based learning model called DIPR (Discussion, Inquiry, Project, Reflection). It argues that the current education system is outdated and promotes lower-order thinking, while students are increasingly disconnected from nature. DIPR uses ecoliteracy as a foundation to engage students through interdisciplinary, project-based learning on sustainability topics. Professional development is needed to train teachers in facilitating DIPR lessons, with support from an EfS action team. When implemented well, DIPR can transition teachers into guides who foster student-driven, collaborative learning of 21st century skills.

Enabling inclusive spaces to decolonise the curriculum: student-centred zine-...decolonisingdmu
Dr Michael Kilmister, Victoria Grace-Bland and Mathew Haine
University of Reading
Can student-created ‘zines’ (small-circulation/self-published magazines) help decolonise the curriculum? Are they a way of collecting information and views that other forms of student voice-gathering activities, like the focus group or the research survey, might not capture? Further, might zines mobilise and empower marginalised and underrepresented groups in higher education contexts? These questions seeded a cross-unit staff-student partnership project at the University of Reading. This talk will offer reflections on the authors’ experience of facilitating a series of zine-making workshops with students and publishing the resulting zines. Observations and preliminary analysis of student evaluation data finds creative exercises (and spaces) engender an informal and rewarding atmosphere in which students can freely share authentic views and enjoy themselves. A creative and responsive medium with vast possibilities in format, design and substance, the authors find that zines are polar opposites of the glossy publications and toolkits typically produced and valued in institutional settings; therefore, they appear to offer new audiences and possibilities for decolonising the curriculum scholarship. Overall, the paper will present the case that zine-making workshops offer inclusive and creative spaces where complex theory can be explored and applied to lived experience, and where conversations about sensitive topics like racism in higher education can be supported and productively advanced.

Inspiring Sustainability in the Construction Curriculum- Claire Davies AIEMA,...Scott Buckler
The Manchester College is committed to sustainability through its educational programs and campus operations. It has over 40,000 learners across 14 campuses totaling over 100,000 square meters. One project showed how a small investment and group effort can achieve impactful results. Students from various programs came together to transform a scrap land area into a garden oasis using recycled materials. The garden provides learners hands-on skills development, pride in their work, and a place for counseling. It has also improved campus environment and engaged even challenging students in learning. The college aims to continue expanding such cross-curricular, real-world projects to support learners' holistic development.

LAND USE LAND COVER AND NDVI OF MIRZAPUR DISTRICT, UPRAHUL
This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall

Contact details

Who initiated your effort?
Victoria Wang (former biomedicine student)
Who is the target group for your effort?
Biomedical, toxicology and bioentrepreneurship students from KI
What is the aim of your effort?
Through a mentorship program, matching students and mentors within life science: To help
students find alternative career paths/stimulate in actively thinking about their careers and gaining
insight about both industry and academia. To broaden their professional network.
11. Effort profiles example cont.
What changes do you envision as a result of your effort?
That students gain more knowledge about what they can do with their educational
backgrounds, both the traditional and alternative paths, and that students earlier
start to think about networking and what they want to do – minimizing the
surprises on examination day.
…or Have there been any changes at KI as a result of your effort?
The interest in the program among students increases for each year and we think it
becomes more common to look on careers in a broader perspective. Many mentors
also comes back year after year, although we unfortunately aim to have a small
group thus cannot provide all students with a mentor.
Timeline for your effort:
The program runs annually from October to September.
With whom do you collaborate?
BioN, KI Alumni & Friends
12. Effort profiles example cont.
How is your effort funded?
KI Alumni & Friends, historically also the Program Committee for the
Biomedical programs
How can others get involved?
Contact existing project leaders.
More Information:
This is very important for this group of students especially, since in
biomedicine, being KIs only academic education, the careers paths are not
very clear and this part is often missing in the education itself. For masters
in toxicology and bioentrepreneurship, this is of course a bit different, but
they on the other hand can benefit a lot from professional networking. For
all parties, this is truly pressing today when the life science industry is
evolving.
