Lavacon 2012: see what's new in FrameMaker 11 and FrameMaker 11 Publishing Server. This presentation by Adobe Sr. Product Manager, Kapil Verma (@kapilAdobe) covers the many areas of feature and product improvement in FrameMaker 11. Major improvements like XPath, XQuery, XML Code view and "intelliprompt" for elements and attributes are most welcomed. Even is you are still doing "unstructured" authoring, the ability to generate a hyperlinked parts table from 3D diagrams, in place insertion of styles, improved FIND/CHANGE and more control over customizing your user interface are a huge help. Also find out how tooutput to multiview HTML5 to publish to tablets and mobile devices.

Joe Gollner of Gnostyx Reseeach covers how Tech Communicators must dovetail with the product lifecycle. This sounds simpler than it is, due to long held habits in the corporate world. Joe covers how Peter Drucker foresaw our current cycles back in 1954 and shares examples of how and why disconnected "silos" of content exist within the same organization. This is a highly original and engaging approach to a topic that is seldom addressed this successfully.

#STC13: The Future of Tech Comm is Here. Are you ready for it?Maxwell Hoffmann
Adobe's Kapil Verma's presentation data makes clear that more work is being asked from a shrinking work force. The move to structured authoring has picked up significantly in the last couple of years. Structured authoring is more prevalent in larger corporations. Due to YouTube and other factors there is an increasing demand for multimedia in technical communication. By the end of 2013, 90% of Internet traffic will be video.
Adobe's Kapil Verma presented results from an extensive survey of STC members. The survey helps answer the following questions: (a) Who is a technical communicator and where does she work? (b) How does she do her work? (c) Is she leveraging the latest technology in her work?
#STC13 ADOBE DAY: Metrics for the Content CarpenterMaxwell Hoffmann
"Adobe Day" presenter, Mark Lewis, contrasts traditional productivity (pages per day) metrics with new metrics and metrics critical to project success. His research reveals how to determine the true cost of a DITA task or topic, and also how that cost is reduced over time with constant re-use. Many concepts shared may be found in Mark's new book (published by the Rockley Group): "DITA Metrics 101: The Business Case for XML and Intelligent Content".
Content needs to be written differently when you primary delivery is on smart phones or tablets. Shorter sentence structure and reduced word count, as well as principles from SEO are recommended.
Unfortunately, most of us don't write this way; we write until we fill up a laptop or computer screen. Also, our eyes can "remember" more on a sheet of paper or large screen than we can in transient "thumb fuls" of smart phone paragraphs.
Try the exercises developed by Maxwell Hoffmann of Adobe, and you will be surprised at how easy it is to "think different / write diffe
Are You Tempted to Use a Template to Expedite Policies & Procedure Development?Maxwell Hoffmann
When you or others in your organization mention the term “template” for policies and procedures (P&P), do you really know what type of template you or they are talking about? It is a fact: there is much confusion and misunderstanding about what is meant by “template” and the expectation of using a template for developing or communicating P&P content. Join the recognized P&P authority Raymond Urgo as he defines three types of templates and clarifies their purposes and limitations. He will reveal why people are tempted toward templates for solutions and fall victim to templates for the wrong reasons resulting in poor P&P content.
Every day technical communication teams are being asked to do something new. Given the rate of change that is apparent in the marketplace, and the expanding array of new devices and venues that will need to be supported, this trend will only accelerate. One question that comes up is how do teams explore the new publishing pathways so that they can determine what changes they will need to their overall content creation and publishing process. Join Intelligent Content thought leader Joe Gollner as he guides us through some proven steps in exploring new information products and refining content processes. In particular, this session will introduce the concept of a content scenario, a technique he has used for years to help organizations adapt their information product portfolios efficiently and effectively. As part of this session, Joe will introduce a public domain content scenario for helping projects to explore how DITA might be used to address certain types of new information product. Join Joe Gollner and Adobe product evangelist Maxwell Hoffmann for this practical session on how technical communication teams can handle the demands being sent their way.
With more and more people using tablets for reading technical documentation, this webinar looks at how this trend will affect the way technical documents are designed and developed. We'll look at examples of documents that 'work' on a tablet, as well as documents that don't. We'll explore some of the emerging design trends for presenting technical documentation on tablets, and what they mean for Technical Writers. We'll also investigate how tablets, and the technologies contained within then, could be used to improve the User Assistance we provide to our readers.

Creating or editing content for mobile devices requires rethinking everything from word count and sentence length to how often we use tables or nested lists. Maxwell Hoffmann, Product Evangelist for Adobe, shares some creative exercises that will help you see and think through your content differently before single-source publishing to mobile devices.
The point of the exercises is to help break the subconscious habit of viewing authored content through a "page-shaped" lens.

How can you make your content reach a wider audience, including the disabled?
People who reach life expectancy can look forward to be classified as disabled for about 11% of their lifetime. People with disabilities constitute the nation's (USA) largest minority group, the only one which any of us can join at any time. People with disabilities constitute about 15% of the population.
