Paper 2
CMN/LIN 5 Spring 2016
1
Instructions for the Forums and Email Analysis Paper:
What You Learned About Intercultural Communication
The purpose of the second CMN/LIN 5 paper is to analyze what
you learned about
Intercultural Communication from participating in the forums
and the email.
For this paper, read through all the forum posts for your group,
and all the emails you
sent and received in your group—including your own emails,
the emails of the Brazilian
students, and the emails of your California classmates. As you
13. receive the second email from
your Brazilian partners (roughly May 18) read these too.
forum posts. As you do so, think about which emails and forum
posts were most interesting to
you. Also think about which concepts from Piller led to the
most interesting interactions in your
group. Think about what you learned from your groupmates,
your Brazilian partners, and from
Piller. Based on this experience of reading through forum posts
and emails, construct an
argument about some important aspect of Intercultural
Communication. You can use ideas from
the BASIC framework as part of this, but you don’t have to. To
support your argument, quote
emails and forum posts from your group. It will probably be
useful to quote Piller (if you do,
give the page number), but this is not a strict requirement. One
way or another, you need to
connect clearly to course themes as discussed in sections or
lecture. The important thing is to
make a clear argument about Intercultural Communication and
use quotes from the forum posts
and emails as evidence/examples to support your argument.
NOTE: It is possible to quote just the forum posts, or just the
emails, or both forum posts and
emails. [It is not required that you quote both forum posts AND
emails]
Be sure your paper:
• Has a title page and an interesting title
• Is 3 pages in length (750-1000 words) aside from your title
page
• Uses standard formatting (1-inch margins, Times font or
14. something similar, 12 point font,
double-spaced)
• Addresses an audience that is the broader community of
CMN/LIN 5 participants
• Makes connections to course themes from section discussions,
lecture, or the textbook
• Uses quotation marks correctly, where necessary, and
sparingly (see below)
• Is proofread, spellchecked, and substantially free from
preventable errors
• Is uploaded to SmartSite assignments by Friday June 3 at 5 pm
Citing sources and plagiarism: Plagiarism is the use of others’
work as your own and is
reportable to the Office of Student Judicial Affairs for
appropriate sanctions. When writing or
researching, the sources used (in this case, the Piller textbook,
forum posts, or your group
members’ emails) must be cited in order to avoid plagiarism, a
serious form of academic
dishonesty. For this paper, citing your source and putting the
author’s exact words in quotation
marks will be important. For longer quotes, it is appropriate to
paraphrase or use block quotes.
The examples given here are in APA citation style, which is
commonly used for the social
sciences. FOR THIS PAPER, YOU WILL ONLY CITE IN THE
BODY OF YOUR PAPER—
YOU DO NOT NEED A LIST OF REFERENCES AT THE END.
Paper 2
15. CMN/LIN 5 Spring 2016
2
How to cite your sources in APA style
Examples of how to integrate shorter quotes from email in APA
style:
According to Mary Wong, “Listening to music is the best way to
learn about another culture”
(email, 5/22/15).
Mary Wong explains that “Listening to music is the best way to
learn about another culture”
(email, 5/22/15).
In an email, dated 5/22/15, Mary Wong argues that in her
experience, exploring music from
another culture is a particularly valuable path to intercultural
understanding.
For quotes longer than 40 words, use block quotes. An example
with proper formatting is
appears in the example below. To create block quotes, set its
margins ½ inch from the
normal margins.
What you are reading here is an example of a block quote. If
you are introducing the
author in this introductory sentence, you should include the
author’s name, date, and page
16. number. Use a colon ahead of the block quote like this:
Thank you for your recent purchase. We hope you’ll take the
time to review your
product and share your opinion with fellow Eddie Bauer
customers. It will help
your community make smarter purchase decisions, and it will
help us serve you
better. So don't hold back—share your review and voice your
opinion (Eddie
Bauer, email, 5/16/15).
