In this assignment, you should practice writing using the writing process and developing a well-constructed analysis essay in formal register. The essay should show how an analysis of the visual components of an image leads to a better understanding of the image.
Process for Completion
The first step in this process will be to choose an image. Browse the images available through the Gordon Parks Foundation Archives. The link is available near the end of Unit 3. Choose an image that you find engaging and that you feel offers ample opportunity for analysis. Some images are interesting, but they’re difficult to talk about. The image you choose will be the subject of your essay.
After you have chosen your image, you should engage in some prewriting activities using the ideas and terms presented in Unit 4. First, take stock of your initial reactions to the image. What emotions did you feel as you first looked at the photograph? What aspects about the image lead viewers to react a certain way?
Before you begin writing, you will want to perform some research. This assignment requires at least one source (print or web). If you're choosing an image about the Civil Rights Movement, you might want to research the movement. If you're choosing an image about Flavio in Rio de Janeiro, you might want to research how Gordon Parks met Flavio. You're welcome to use more than one source, but be sure to keep track of the information you gain from your source so that you can cite the source appropriately.
Next, analyze the image by looking closely at the content, framing, composition, focus, color, lighting and context. What interesting or unique features do you notice about the image? What is the cultural or historical context of the image? You should record all of these activities. Some of them will become important pieces of your final draft.
Next, it will be time to find your focus and begin generating a working thesis statement. For this assignment, your thesis will make a claim about the
meaning
of the image. In other words, what message does the image communicate? Remember, every image tells a story and an image may tell a different story depending on who is looking. Once you have decided what idea or story the image communicates to you, you will need to explain how content, framing, focus, color, angle and lighting come together to create that story or convey meaning. Your thesis will be more specific if you show which visual elements your essay discusses and what they do to create meaning. So, an example thesis might be something like this: “Through content, framing, and angle, the image demonstrates how segregation affected not only adults but also the children of black families in the South.”

The Symposium Project is the culmination of the lab portion of the course. For this assignment, you will be having your own class symposium. At a symposium (sometimes also called a colloquium), scientists will present their work in the form of a short talk (often using something like PowerPoint). At scientific conferences, presentations of results of research projects are often made into posters, and there is usually a large room where these posters are put up for others to read. Presenters will sometimes stand at their posters at designated times to discuss their work with their colleagues. While difficult to create a poster in an online environment, you will put your project together in some form that makes it easy to read. You may use PowerPoint, Word, or some other format (as long as it will be easily readable by everyone).
For this project, we will actually be doing something different than your previous labs. In this activity, you will be using the internet to direct a robotic telescope (yes, a real telescope controllable via the web) to take images of your selected object. You will be instructed how to use free, downloadable software to create a color composite using those images. If you are deployed and are not allowed to download software, you'll skip that step. Then, you'll put together a "poster" showing the images you collected from the robotic telescopes, the composite color image you created, and a "professional" image of the same object (links provided in the instructions), along with some text explaining what your object is. Make sure that each image is properly labelled (including the source for the "professional" image). Dataset Mining

Create your own simple program using a repetition(i.e Loop) structure. You decide the theme. Provide an overview (i.e Program Design) of what your repetition structure is doing. Then provide the Pseudocode of your example. Please keep the design simple for this exercise. Just a few lines of code is all that is needed for this response.
First, write using a For loop for a fixed number of loops.
Then for the same program use a While loop with a sentinel approach.
When using the While loop, you will need some logic to exit the loop and you will need a loop counter.
You could take one of your prompts from Road Trip and create a loop around it.
I dont want to see just a loop where you just print out the loop counter.
Some suggestions:
1)prompt for mileage run daily, count the days, calculate the ave miles per day, display total miles and ave daily miles
2)prompt for grocery costs per week, count the weeks, calculate the ave grocery costs per week, display total grocery costs and ave grocery costs

Remember--- The accumulation of total is done inside the loop. To calculate ave you divide the accumulated total by the number of whatever you are looping. The ave is done after the end of the loop.

Convert Part 1 to C-code. You only need to do one of the loop types. Don't for get to indent your code. Put Part 2 - problem no.X in the Subject area and submit a .txt (or .c) file for your code.
Part 3 (optional):
Take your While-End repetition structure from Part 1 and modify it so that the While condition test uses a Boolean variable. You will need to initialize the Boolean variable prior to the loop as well as set it inside the loop so that you exit the loop appropriately.

Dataset Mining
Your project should deliver on the functionality described in your project proposal. This document provides a design brief for a deck of playing cards to promote From the Sun Winery. The winery has an elegant yet fun-loving tone. The cards will be given away at an outdoor wine festival in Indiana to target audiences of wine enthusiasts aged 30+ who enjoy both elegant and playful graphic styles. The design should celebrate the elegance and joy of wine in a bold yet desaturated colorful style, incorporating imagery of sun, grapevines and wine bottles/glasses to communicate the winery's message.
Water Bottle Typology Photography Statement
The student was excited about their typology project which involves comparing and contrasting similar items. They initially considered photographing bathroom sinks but found water bottles to be more convenient. Water bottles are well-suited for the project as there are many varieties that all serve the same purpose. Through the water bottles, the viewer can learn about and make assumptions about the personalities of the owners. The student made sure the water bottles were framed straight in all the images to emphasize the items being photographed for the typology project.

- 1. Making Meaning Fall 2019 Assignment 01 Form Translation Formfollows function— thathasbeen misunder- stood.Form and function shouldbe one,joined inaspiritual union. — Frank Lloyd Wright Complete information about assignments and upload points can always be found on the Canvas class website. FormTranslation Select 3 hand-held tools or objects (other than a can opener) that you can easily carry, something with sufficient detail so that you will be able to depict your object in diverse ways. When selecting, consider the following 2 criteria: first, the function of your objects should involve movement; second, your object must have a sufficient level of detail. For instance, a pencil does not offer significant formal qualities to sustain a broadly divergent examination of its form (even though it does have a function involving movement). Bring your 3 objects to class; we’ll discuss their merits/potential, and you will select one to work with for the project. In class you will work to photograph your object so that we are able to clearly “read” and understand it. These images will reside at the denotative end of representation. Your photographs should demonstrate effective lighting, background, etc. The object should be clear and in focus. From your numerous photographs you will choose one to use as a ‘model’ for translation into high contrast black and white illustrations. Your final photograph will be Version 01. Your B/W illustrations must be execut- ed using Adobe Illustrator and must employ a highly stylized formal language (reread ‘representational style’ in your text & note figures 2.4A–C, pp 42–43). Your object illustrations will be Version 02 and Version 03. For the final you will submit 3 images; your image format (size) must be a 6" square. All 3 are to be mounted on a single black board 24" x 10"; 2" borders around the outside ; 1" between the images. Learning Objectives: - Gain a deeper understanding of denotative versus connotative meaning/s. - Demonstrate an understanding of qualities that constitute visual language. - Further expand your capacity to see, to carefully examine, considering both form and function. - Further develop your ability to use appropriate software with confidence. - Practice divergence / convergence through an iterative design process. - Demonstrate your ability to follow directions with attention to detail and self-directed behavior. - Produce a professional mounted presentation according to prescribed guidelines. Step One: Research / DUE: Tuesday 3 September Select 3 potential objects, bring to class for discussion on how well they satisfy the criteria; begin photograph- ing and choose the strongest for translation; the final selected photograph is your Version 01. Step Two: Contextualize, Execute and Reflect / DUE: Thursday 5 September Using your photo as a guide, make drawings with a blunt (i.e. fat) black sharpie on tracing paper or translucent marker paper. Create iterative sketches that explore abstracting the photographed form. How much can you delete and still read the form? How much detail is needed for visual interest? Include both shape and line in your abstraction. Consider line weight. Select the most successful sketches to refine further. Develop precise drawings approximately 6" square. With feedback from class, select one drawing to produce as a vector illus- tration. Step Three: Contextualize, Write, Execute and Reflect / DUE: Tuesday 10 September Scan this drawing. Use Adobe Illustrator to refine and produce a vector illustration (do not be tempted by the evil Illustrator “Image Trace”—that way lies the road to perdition); this will be Version 02. While this image will strongly resemble your object, it has moved toward the connotative end of representation. This is not a photo realistic drawing. Step Four: Contextualize, Write, Execute and Reflect / DUE: Thursday 12 September Final project: 3 iterations based on your final image combined with text to suggest 3 different messages Consider the function of your object and create an image that visually suggests the movement and function of your object. Follow the same iterative sketching process, create a vector illustration based on abstracting func- tion. This image will be connotative as a representation and will be your Version 03. Version 02 and Version 03 should share a consistent visual language / vocabulary (line weights, shapes, rhythm, etc) i.e. they should look as if they are meant to be together. Criteria: - format is 6.5 x 9 inches centered on 8.5 x 11 inch paper / horizontal or vertical - black hairline rule outlines image area - one original image / 3 distinct versions with different text and detailing Reflect: - write a brief (one page max; half page minimum) reflective paper on this assignment.
