This document provides a history of forcible entry tools used by firefighters, beginning with the Claw Tool and Kelly Tool that were predecessors to the modern Halligan Tool. Firefighter Hugh Halligan designed the Halligan Tool to be lighter, more efficient, and less fatiguing for forcing entry during emergencies. Though the FDNY was initially reluctant to purchase Halligan's patented design, it eventually became the standard forcible entry tool issued to units due to its effectiveness. The Halligan Tool revolutionized firefighters' ability to forcibly enter structures.
