Throughout history listening has been studied and a conclusion has been made that in fact being a good listener can allow one to challenge the information that is heard. Studies have shown that effective listening is a critical tool that is so often not used. “In the health care setting the communication technique such as the quality of listening provides both therapeutic value in the patient and the provider,” Banar, M. (2011). There are many different ways to be an active and effective listener, one of which is the therapeutic technique. “Therapeutic listening is an interpersonal confirmation process, involving all the senses, in which the therapist attends with empathy to the client's verbal and nonverbal messages to facilitate the understanding, synthesis, and interpretation of the client's situation,” according to the NCBI website. This paper will be taking an exploratory view of communication as a whole, effective health communication and focusing on the therapeutic technique of listening.
Let’s begin by examining what interpersonal communication can bring to the health care setting. Interpersonal communication consists of four principles which describes that interpersonal communication is irreversible, contextual, inescapable and complicated, thus meaning that communication cannot be avoided nor taken back once begun. Interpersonal communication is up close and personal and consists of verbal and nonverbal communication as well as listening. In order to have effective interpersonal communication one needs to consider these key areas, emotions, habits, needs, personalities and values of others. “Effective interpersonal communication skills are said to be the gateway to the development of other important life skills,” (Servellen 1).
Clear and effective communication is of great importance in order for patients to be enabled to properly and completely understand health information, without this ability adequate healthcare cannot be achieved. “Research evidence indicates that there are strong positive relationships between a healthcare team member’s communication skills and a patient’s capacity to follow through with medical recommendations, self-manage a chronic medical condition, and adopt preventive health behaviors” according to the Institute for Healthcare Communication web site. A client that feels as though the provider is truly interested in their total care and well-being is more likely to follow the treatment .

The primary role of all health
care workers is that of patient
servant. In health care, being a
patient servant requires com-
passion for the patient, and many profes-
sionals personally aspire to have empa-
thy and altruism in all patient encoun-
ters. As followers, health care workers
might be free to choose which leader
they desire to follow and a level of com-
mitment they will provide to the leader
and the organization. Lastly, health care
workers, including medical imaging
technologists, can be in leadership roles
within an organization, and workers
should study leadership concepts rou-
tinely to prepare for these roles.
Service and Leadership
A given individual’s choice to enter a
helping profession is the foundation for
patient care. Studies have reported that
nurses provided the following reasons
for their career choice1:
� Caring for people.
� Rewarding work.
� Possible career advancement.
� Family history of working in
health care.
� Career security.
� Socialization.
� Job satisfaction.
� Interest in the human body and
medicine.
An Australian study of nearly 800
nurses and nursing students identified
the top 5 reasons for entering the nurs-
ing profession as it being an interesting
job, an opportunity for caring for
others, working with people, the per-
ception that nursing was a calling, and
a sense of giving to the community.1
Although health care workers choose to
work in a field in which they take care
of others for various reasons, providing
honest patient care has been long estab-
lished as a primary motivation.

The exposure of the people to media, social media has increased the vulnerability of people very much. There is a tendency to portray one’s best self in front of others which only reflects the positive aspect of one’s life. This action affects not only the person who is presenting self but indirectly also the people you watch them on social media. People with low esteem tend to get affected by the people around them and start comparing their lives with those they are socially connected to. Thus, there are already a lot of unsaid and unexplained pressures present in our day to day lives. Emotions therefore have a huge impact on each and everyone’s lives. They affect directly as well as indirectly. Directly they affect one’s own self-awareness with respect to what and how they feel and how well can they take charge of their emotions and indirectly they affect the other people they interact with and deal with in their personal and professional lives. Handling and dealing the emotions in professional lives is the key to professional success especially in professions where the major dealing is with people. Healthcare is one such profession and physicians and nurses as well as other healthcare providers are the professionals who need to carry out their duties while dealing with people as they are their touch points of services to be rendered to. It therefore becomes critical for physicians to have a high level of emotional quotient in order to deal with people who are suffering from different ailments and to handle their as well as emotions of self while providing clinical advice.
