The match: warm-up
The warm-up is when players prepare their
bodies for the game. The teams usually do a
warm-up on the pitch before the game starts.
EnglishVocabulary:1.
Example:
toss-up
The toss-up is when the referee throws a coin
in the air before the game. If the captain wins
the toss, he decides which end to play.

Example:
kick-off
The kick-off is when a player passes the ball to
start the game. The ball has to be on the centre
spot for the kick-off.

Example:
first half
The first half is the initial 45 minutes of the
game. However, a few minutes are usually
added on at the end of the first half.

Example:
Half-time is when the teams have a break at
the end of the first half. There are usually 15
minutes of half-time.

Example:
extra-time
Extra-time is an additional 30 minutes of play
in a cup game when the two teams are tied
(e.g. 0-0 or 1-1).

full-time
Full-time is the end of the 90 minutes of the
normal time of the game. But some minutes are
usually added on after full-time.

injury time
Injury time is the time added on after full time
for interruptions during the game. There are
usually three or four minutes of injury time.

final whistle
The final whistle is when the referee signals
the end of the game. The referee blows the
final whistle at the end of the game.

second half
The second half is the last 45 minutes of the
game. When the teams return to the pitch after
half-time, the second half starts.

Action: team
A team is a group of footballers playing
together. There are 20 teams in the Premier
League.

Action: defenders
Defenders play at the back of the team. The
job of a defender is to stop the attacks of the
other team.

Action: captain
The captain is the leader of the team. The two
captains shake hands before the game.

Full-backs play at the sides of the defence.
Many full-backs also help the team to attack.

Football Vocabulary: The pitch Football Vocabulary: The pitch
The pitch: centre circle
The centre circle is a large circle around the
centre spot. For the kick-off the opposing
players must not enter the centre circle.

centre spot
The centre spot is a small circle in the middle
of the pitch. The ball is put on the centre spot
at the start of the game.

Example:
corners
In each of the four corners of the pitch, there
is a small semi-circle with a flag. You take
corner kicks from this semi-circle.

Example:
goal lines
The goal lines go along the two ends of the
pitch.

Example:
The part of the pitch where the ball must go for
the team to score. The goal has two posts, a
crossbar and a net.

The touch lines go along the two sides of the
pitch.

penalty area
The penalty area is a large rectangular zone in
front of the goal. The goalkeeper can’t use his
hands outside the area.

The penalty spot is a small circle inside the
penalty area. You take penalties from the
penalty spot.

six yard box
The six yard box (or “goal area”) is a small
rectangular zone in front of the goal. You take

Action: cross
When you cross the ball, you send it from the
wing towards the strikers in the middle.
Wingers are often good at crossing the ball.

Example:
Action: head
When you head the ball, you strike it with the
front of your head (your forehead). Centre-
backs and strikers are usually good at heading
the ball.

Example:
Action: mark
When you mark a player from the other team,
you stay close to him. If you mark the player
well, it’s difficult for him to receive the ball.

Example:
Action: pass
When you pass, you send the ball to another
player in your team. If you don’t pass the ball
quickly, you may lose it!

Example:
Action: dribble
When you dribble, you run with the ball close
to your feet. It’s very difficult to take the ball
away from a good dribbler!

Example:
Action: tackle
When you tackle a player, you try to take the
ball away from him. Defenders have to be good
at tackling.

Example:
Action: save
When a goalkeeper saves a shot or header, he
stops the ball going into the goal. It’s usually
easier to save a long shot than one near the
goal. .

Example:
Action: score
When you score, your team has a goal. Every
player wants to score a goal!

Action: shoot
When you shoot, you try to score by kicking
the ball towards the goal. If you don’t shoot,
you won’t score many goals!

punch
When a goalkeeper punches the ball, he strikes
it with his closed hand (his fist). Keepers often
punch the ball if a shot or cross is difficult to
catch.

The teams usually do a warm-up on the pitch before the game starts. EnglishVocabulary:1. Example: toss-up The toss-up is when the referee throws a coin in the air before the game. If the captain wins the toss, he decides which end to play. EnglishVocabulary:2. Example: kick-off The kick-off is when a player passes the ball to start the game. The ball has to be on the centre spot for the kick-off. EnglishVocabulary:3. Example: first half The first half is the initial 45 minutes of the game. However, a few minutes are usually added on at the end of the first half. EnglishVocabulary:4. Example: Half-time is when the teams have a break at the end of the first half. There are usually 15 minutes of half-time. EnglishVocabulary:5. Example: extra-time Extra-time is an additional 30 minutes of play in a cup game when the two teams are tied (e.g. 0-0 or 1-1). EnglishVocabulary:10. Example: full-time Full-time is the end of the 90 minutes of the normal time of the game. But some minutes are usually added on after full-time. EnglishVocabulary:7. Example: injury time Injury time is the time added on after full time for interruptions during the game. There are usually three or four minutes of injury time. EnglishVocabulary:8. final whistle The final whistle is when the referee signals the end of the game. The referee blows the final whistle at the end of the game. EnglishVocabulary:9. There are 20 teams in the Premier League. EnglishVocabulary:1. Example: Action: defenders Defenders play at the back of the team. The job of a defender is to stop the attacks of the other team. EnglishVocabulary:2. Example: Action: captain The captain is the leader of the team. The two captains shake hands before the game. EnglishVocabulary:3. Example: Action: full-backs Full-backs play at the sides of the defence. Many full-backs also help the team to attack. EnglishVocabulary:4. For the kick-off the opposing players must not enter the centre circle. EnglishVocabulary:1. Example: centre spot The centre spot is a small circle in the middle of the pitch. The ball is put on the centre spot at the start of the game. EnglishVocabulary:2. Example: corners In each of the four corners of the pitch, there is a small semi-circle with a flag. Wingers are often good at crossing the ball. EnglishVocabulary:1. Example: Action: head When you head the ball, you strike it with the front of your head (your forehead). Centre- backs and strikers are usually good at heading the ball. EnglishVocabulary:2. Example: Action: mark When you mark a player from the other team, you stay close to him. If you mark the player well, it’s difficult for him to receive the ball. EnglishVocabulary:3. Example: Action: pass When you pass, you send the ball to another player in your team.
