2. • When we go to school we see such different varieties of food
around us.
• In our home the food that is cooked is made from many
ingredients and materials.
• For example, rice is cooked with only two ingredients which are
uncooked rice and water.
• Some substances require small amount of ingredients while others
need more ingredients.
3. FOOD MATERIALS AND SOURCES
• The food that we eat comes from specific sources like vegetable
and fruits come from plants and products like milk and meat come
from animals.
• Plants give us products like wheat, pulses, grams, barley,
vegetables, fruits and cereals.
• Animal give us products like meat, milk, eggs and other things.
4. PARTS OF PLANT & ANIMAL PRODUCT AS FOOD
• We eat many leafy vegetables. We eat fruits of some plants.
Sometimes roots, sometimes stems and even flowers.
• Some plants have two or more edible (eatable) parts. Seeds of
mustard plants give us oil and the leaves are used as a vegetable.
• Take some dry seeds of moong or Chana. Put a small quantity of
seeds in a container filled with water and leave this aside for a
day.
• Next day, drain the water completely and leave the seeds in the
vessel.
• Wrap them with a piece of wet cloth and set aside.
5. • A small white structure may have grown out of the seeds. If so,
the seeds have sprouted.
• honey comes from a beehive where so many bees keep buzzing
about, Bees collect nectar (sweet juices) from flowers convert it
into honey and store it in their hive.
• Flowers and their nectar may be available only for a part of the
year. So, bees store this nectar for their use all through the year.
6. WHAT DO ANIMALS EAT?
• Animals can be categorized into three types on the basis of the
food they eat.
• Herbivores- animals that eat only plants and its other products are
called herbivores for example horse, cow, elephant, giraffe and
many more.
• Carnivores- animals that eat only other animals flesh are called
carnivores for example dog, lion, tiger, hyena and others.
• Omnivores- animals that can eat both plants and animals are
called omnivores for example bear, crow, humans etc.
