Vertical farming is the practice of growing produce in vertically stacked layers.
Vertical farms come in different shapes and sizes, from simple two-level or wall-mounted
systems to large warehouses several stories tall.
Vertical farming typically uses a mix of natural light and artificial light. Artificial lighting is often LED-based and may be driven by a renewable power source such as solar power or wind turbines.

Rought Draft #1 : Food & Water
Food and water is the most important things in human life. We eat food and drink
water to survive in the world. A lot of people know that food and water is really important
to them but they don’t really care about throwing away food and water. Because most
people think that the society has enough food and water, they always throw away their
leftover food and water. Although, people thinks that we have an unlimited sources for
food and water, world clearly shows that not just America, but other countries are
struggling with drought situations and they are slowly running out of food. This is not the
only problem. A lot of people in this society is having trouble with obese because of food
and water. Although, people can eat whatever they want to eat, they should have a limit
because United States’ obesity problem is getting worse than before and a lot of people
dies every year because of obesity.
“If the average calories consumed at each visit were reduced by approximately
60 calories, the population impact on obesity could be significant,” (American Journal of
Preventive Medicine). Obesity started when America started to build a lot of fast food
restaurants. For example, McDonalds, BurgerKing, KFC, ETC. These fast food chain
store changed a lot of people’s life in a bad way. People started to gain weight and sick
because of these fast food restaurants. Because fast food store’s foods have a lot of
calories and unhealthy ingredient, people starts to gain overweight. However, some
people thinks that obesity isn’t bad as diseases or cancers. Which is true but it is not
easy to get back to normal when you become obese because people get addicted by
fast foods and they won’t be able to stop eating. Obesity causes lack of balance energy
for your body system. For example, when normal person eats food, the calories
balances out of your weight and calories you need. However, if you have obese,
calories doesn’t balance and the fat gets created inside the body. This causes coronary
heart disease and high blood pressure. Honestly, people don’t really have to worry
about food and water if they exercise and move around regularly. Obesity is generally
caused by eating fast foods or any kinds of food without exercising or moving. Even
though food and water is really important to us, people need to know that food and
water can be dangerous to us if we don’t exercise or move around after we eat. Our
environment doesn’t support healthy lifestyle habits so it encourages obesity. The
solution of the obesity is to work out/diet, and make rules in school/work/private places
that they have to move around at least 30 minutes. The cause of obesity can be being
lazy but the main point is about how much food and what kind of food you eat.
In this society, every ingredients are limited. Even though there are ...
Sustainable Food Production and Consumption in HawaiiAmyDeSa
An informative presentation that breaks down the way Hawai’i consumes and produces food and provides reasoned explanations as to why they should change. This presentation targets not only how horrible it is for the environment but also to our health.
This is a blog written by Richard Battista about how America wastes so much food. This happens mainly in restaurants. Chefs create portions for one individual that could feed at least two. The extra food usually gets thrown out. It is such a shame that there are people starving in other countries AND in our own. The extra food should be distributed to the hungry. Richard Battista stresses the importance of Chefs and Restaurants being aware of portion sizes and preserving excess food for those who actuallty need it.
It’s hard to overstate the importance of food in our life. Our everyday fuel, food may require more time and attention than we think we can afford. Here you’ll discover useful tips on how to reduce the amount of food that goes uneaten, along with some facts showing why food waste is a serious issue.
Can Organic Kitchen Gardening avert an Urban Food Tragedy?Karan Manral
Where are the vegetables that I eat coming from? Who grows them and how? And how many days old are they by the time that I consume it? The answer is likely to be anything from two to five days old – is that fresh enough for your fresh vegetables?
How much of pesticide use did you approve in your vegetables and fruits?
Every type of vegetable has hundreds or sometimes thousands of varieties. With so many different types of cabbage, how come our supermarkets don’t feature them? If there are so many varieties of tomatoes, how come we have access to only 2-3 varieties over the year? If the advantage of markets is choice, how come we just don't see CHOICE?
It is slowly becoming apparent that food systems in urban places requires a massive overhaul. After several experiments with farmers and on our own urban organic farm (www.yogifarms.com), we have developed conceptual model that addresses the concerns associated with the current food system. This Alternative Food Network (AFN), looks at connecting organic kitchen gardeners, small farmers and customers, with the primary focus on quality of nutrient content of the food.
This talk will provide an insight into the conceptual model of AFN and particularly, emphasize on the role of the kitchen gardeners, as one of the main stakeholders of the network. Based on our research of examples of food sufficiency models (such as those in place in Cuba), we will share our experiences of urban food gardening: its successes, trials and tribulations.
In the end, this is an opportunity for you to learn through our experiences about what it means to enjoy farm-fresh meals, access to tastier varieties of ingredients and better health through active and informed food choices.
Want to reduce food waste, save money, help prevent environmental racism, save the environment, and educate yourself and those around you? Throwing away food means you’re throwing away money. Instead, why don’t you just reuse what you can?
Chapter 3 reword1. In what ways does industrialized farming affe.docxwalterl4
Chapter 3 reword
1. In what ways does industrialized farming affect ecological integrity?
Answer: As American agriculture has become more industrial, it has become increasingly dependent on fossil energy and other finite natural resources. The total food system currently claims about twenty-percent of all fossil energy used in the U.S., with farming accounting for about one-third of the total percentage. In fact, our industrial food system requires about ten calories of fossil energy for every calorie of food energy produced. Supplies of fossil energy are finite, and there is a growing consensus that fossil energy in the future will be far less plentiful and costlier.
Pollution represents negative energy, in that it destroys the usefulness of other energy resources or requires energy to mitigate its negative impacts. Industrial agriculture pollutes the air, water, and soil with toxic agrochemicals and livestock manure. It is a major source of pollution, accounting for more than twenty-percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, even more than transportation. In fact, agriculture has become the number one nonpoint source of pollution in the U.S., creating huge dead zones in the Chesapeake Bay and Gulf of Mexico. An industrial agriculture is not ecologically sustainable.
Industrial agriculture also is a significant contributor to the depletion of social energy. Farm workers today are among the lowest paid workers in the U.S., while working under dangerous and disagreeable conditions, most without adequate health care or other fringe benefits. A growing reliance on migrant farm workers also creates cultural and political conflicts, particularly in times when good paying jobs are few. Many farm families fare little better, as independent farmers are periodically forced out of business to make room for further corporate consolidation. Therefore, rural communities in agricultural areas have suffered decades of economic and social decline and decay.
2. The concept of ecosystem services is gaining increasing recognition. What are some of the most important ecosystem services provided by agriculture? To what extent do you think a threatened loss of ecosystem services can drive change in policy and practice? Why?
Answer: Ecosystem services are defined as “the benefits provided by ecosystems to humans”. Many key ecosystem services provided by biodiversity, such as nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, pest regulation and pollination, sustain agricultural productivity. Promoting the healthy functioning of ecosystems ensures the resilience of agriculture as it intensifies to meet growing demands for food production. Climate change and other stresses have the potential to make major impacts on key functions, such as pollination and pest regulation services. Learning to strengthen the ecosystem linkages that promote resilience and to mitigate the forces that impede the ability of agro-ecosystems to deliver goods and services remains an important challenge..

Hamdard Laboratories (India), is a Unani pharmaceutical company in India (following the independence of India from Britain, "Hamdard" Unani branches were established in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and Pakistan). It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became
a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.
Hamdard' is a compound word derived from Persian, which combines the words 'hum' (used in the sense of 'companion') and 'dard' (meaning 'pain'). 'Hamdard' thus means 'a companion in pain' and 'sympathizer in suffering'.
The goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him.
They had always maintained that working in old, traditional ways would not be entirely fruitful. A broader outlook was essential for a continued and meaningful existence. their effective team at Hamdard helped the system gain its pride of place and thus they made an entry into an expansive world of discovery and research.
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language.(itself borrowed from Persian) Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in Pilibhit City UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.
Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan, who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation.
After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen.
Even with humble beginnings, the goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him. Unfortunately, he passed away quite early but his wife, Rabia Begum, with the support of her son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, not only kept the institution in existence but also expanded it. As he grew up, Hakeem Abdul Hameed took on all responsibilities. After helping with his younger brother's upbringing and education, he included him in running the institution. Both brothers Hakeem Abdul Hameed and Hakim Mohammed
2. What is Food Waste?
Food waste is food that is lost during any of the stages of the food supply chain.
Wasting food is not only an ethical and economic issue but it also depletes the environment of limited natural
resources. Food is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain, from initial production down to final household
consumption. One thing that also we observe is that people throw away food while there are people that don’t
have food to eat.
3. Causes
It is really good to celebrate and party every once in a while but we also need to take into consideration the amount of food
waste that comes along with such a lifestyle.
Sometimes, we change plans in regards to the food our family intended to eat and we end up wasting the food our family
was going to eat in the first place.
This category of food waste in the home could have been useful but unfortunately now smells bad, tastes bad andlook bad
due to poor management. To the trash, here we go!!
This category of waste is similar to leftovers, in fact, they can be described as leftovers which end up in the fridge but never
gets re-used again. We all know where such kind of food eventually ends up.
.
4. Problems
Between 33-50% of all food produced globally is never eaten,
and the value of this wasted food is worth over $1 trillion. To put
that in perspective, in the USA food waste represents 1.3% of
the total GDP.
However the reality is that in the ‘developed’ world, more than
50% of food waste takes place in our homes. In contrast, less
than 2% of food waste takes place at the retail store level.
Each family can waste $2,275 each year because of food waste.
Also, one big problem that we don´t realize is that we throw
away a lot food that is not perfect but we can still eat it, and the
world suffers a lot with the massive food waste.
5. Restaurants and Food Waste
The relationship between restaurants and food waste is very high because
the consumers want only perfect dishes and good looking products, and
the chefs want only the fruit and vegetables, meat, fish,... that don´t have
any brown part or strange shapes.
6. Problems and Solutions
Problem: Huge portion sizes at restaurants and buffets can lead to large amounts of food waste, as
people are unable to finish the meals they order.
Solution: Restaurants can reduce this type of waste by offering smaller sizes of menu items.
Problem: Farmers mostly can´t afford to harvest a entire field or a grocer has ordered too much of an item
and can´t sell it all.
Solution: Redistribute food by giving it to food banks and outreach groups.
7. YOU ALSO CAN HELP!!!
Not only restaurants and big factories can help with this problem, each of us can contribute too.
What we can do in our own lives as consumers is to buy less food by not filling the entire cart, or making a
list before you go shopping to buy only the necessary things.
When we eat we have to try not to put a big amount of food on our plate because we can always go back
for more.
If we don't eat our food, you can reuse it after, don´t throw it away.
for a better planet!
