We start feeling tired and weak by the end of
the day
Our body needs food to get nourished and energised .
Thus need for food is one of the important characteristics of living beings.
 When you are hungry you go to
your mummy and say ?
After cooking mummy serves food
for you to eat.
Lets get started
 You mummy is cooking delicious meal for
you.
 Now can you guess where do we get all
these food from?
 Some of you may say plants
 And some may say animals
 And the answer is yes it comes from
plants and animals.

3. Learn about the food material and their sources.
4. Identify various plant parts as food.
5. Discuss different animal products as food.
6. Understand what do animals eat.
7. Know about types of animals on basis of eating habits.

Look at this food what do you notice
In this plate there are many types of food items and each item is made up of
more than one ingredient.
Ingredients to do chapati:
Wheat flour
Water
Similarly dal is made up of pulses, water and other spices.
Food
 We know that all living things be it plants and
animals need food and water to live on.
 We need food because food gives us energy.
 Food contain substances that a body needs
to grow, do various activities, to repair itself
and remain healthy and strong.
These substances are called nutients.
 The food items that we eat in major
portions on daily basis are called
staple food.
Plant as a source
of food
Green plants are known are
producers
Why?
Because they prepare their own food by
the process of photosynthesis.
Fruits and vegetables:
Fruits and vegetables are parts of a
plants that are eaten raw or are cooked
as curries and other dishes.
Parts of plant that we eat:
 Edible Roots:
 Roots of many plants are eaten
as food. The roots store food
prepared by plants .Most of
them are rich in starch.
 (starch= type of carbohydrate
made of 100’s of sugar units.)
 Eg: carrot
 The carrots loaded with
 vitamin A
 Carrots have calcium and
vitamin K, both of which are
important for bone health
Eg: beetroot
 Beets are one of the most
nutritious root vegetables
available.
 It has anticancer properties
 It increases blood flow to the brain
Edible Stems:
 Stems of many plants are eaten as food
In some plants stems are found below the
soil and are modified for the storage of
food.
Edible stems are good source of
fiber that can help prevent heart disease by
keeping cholesterol and blood sugar levels
in check.
Eg: Potato, Ginger, Turmeric
Potatoes are also full of antioxidants that
work to prevent diseases and vitamins that
help your body function properly.
Eg: Turmeric
 Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its
yellow color.
 It really does contain compounds with
medicinal properties
 Edible Stalks:
 Tender stalks of some plants are eaten
as food. These stalks are nutritious and
are good for health.
Stalks are rich in fibre.
(thread like structures ) which helps in easy
elimination of undigested food
Bamboo
It is a flowering evergreen plant.
because of their rich contents of proteins,
carbohydrates, vitamins, fibres, and
minerals and very low fat.
 Edible Flowers :
 Flowers of some plants are eaten as
foods .
 Eg : Clove is a dried flower , which is
used in medicinal preparation as well as
spice that add flavour for food .
 Eg:
 Broccoli is a good source of fibre and
protein, and contains iron, potassium,
calcium
 Cauliflower:
 It adds strength to your bone.
 It builds immune system
Edible Leaves:
 Leaves of many plants are eaten as foods
they are called as leafy vegetables.
 They provide Vitamins and minerals
 Eg:
1) Spinach
 Is rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin
K1, Folic acid, Iron, Calcium
2) Coriander
 is also a good source of: Vitamin A.
Vitamin C, Vitamin K.
 Vitamin A: Immunity and eye sight
 Vitamin C : helps to protect cells and
keeping them healthy. maintaining
healthy skin, blood vessels, bones
 Vitamin K: Blood clot.
 Edible Seeds:
 Seeds of many plants are eaten as
foods.
 Cereals and pulses are a part of our diet
food.
 Pulses are edible seeds found in
different colour and sizes.
Pulses are a great source of vitamins and
minerals. ...
