David Schwartz and Anim Steel co-founded the Real Food Challenge (RFC) to shift $1 billion of college food purchases to "real food" by 2020 in order to build a healthy, fair, and green food economy. They were inspired by disparities in access to healthy food and opportunities. The RFC aims to reverse trends in diet-related diseases and environmental issues by harnessing the power of youth and universities' purchasing power. It provides resources like summits, trainings, and a purchasing calculator to support students' efforts to increase their schools' purchases of real food.
