This document discusses blue/green deployments for LearnBop, an online tutoring platform. It describes setting up two environments with separate load balancers to allow deploying new code without disrupting existing users. Serverless is very often referred to as the approach which will let you to shift focus to implementing business logic when writing the code. But where has the complexity moved to now? Examples of these primitives include a reliable method to build consensus in a distributed system, reliable and scalable key-value store, infrastructure for a transactional logging system, scalable database query layers using both NoSQL and SQL APIs, and a system for scalable and elastic compute infrastructure. The term “reactive” has lately become a buzzword, with a variety of definitions around the Web. When you hear reactive, what do you think of? Reactive Streams? The Reactive Manifesto? ReactJS? These terms may seem unrelated, but they share a common core concept. Reactive applications and reactive programming result in flexible, concise, performant code and are a superior alternative to the old standard thread-based imperative programming model. The reactive approach has gained popularity recently for one simple reason: we need alternative designs and architectures to meet today’s demands. However, it can be difficult to shift one’s mind to think in reactive terms due to how accustomed we’ve become to the imperative style. Stephen Pember explores the various definitions of reactive and reactive programming with the goal of providing techniques for building efficient, scalable applications. Steve dives into the key concepts of Reactive Streams and examines some sample implementations—including how ThirdChannel is currently using reactive libraries in production code. Steve looks at some of the open source options available in the JVM—including Reactor, RxJava, and Ratpack—giving attendees an idea of where to begin with the reactive ecosystem. If reactive is new to you, this should be an excellent introduction.

Common optimizations include tweaking process model settings, removing unnecessary pipeline components, and using compiled Linq queries. 2) Issues like application-level DOS attacks, slow profile provider stored procedures, and Linq to SQL performance problems can be addressed to improve scalability. Using a CDN can also help offload static content delivery. 3) Database queries must consider index usage and transaction isolation levels to prevent timeouts and deadlocks under high load.

For the first site, moving to AWS and optimizing the configuration improved page load times by 30-40%. For the second slower site, benchmarking showed the AWS setup had double the performance of the existing dedicated server hosting. Both sites saw benefits from the scalability and easier management that AWS provided for their Drupal applications.

ADEC uses reinforcement learning where each instance independently monitors itself and learns optimal management policies over time through a reward/punishment system. Instances coordinate using a distributed hash table to provision and dynamically place applications across instances to maximize utilization while meeting response time and availability requirements. The system was evaluated on Amazon EC2 using a hotel management application under varying workloads, demonstrating ADEC's ability to independently start and shutdown instances to meet application objectives.

Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability. Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies.
