This document discusses FOAMed (Free Open Access Medical education) and its benefits. It is divided into three parts. Part 1 defines FOAMed and explains why social media is used for medical education. Part 2 provides examples of FOAMed in action through blogs, podcasts, conferences and training programs. Part 3 addresses five common concerns with FOAMed: issues of academic rigour, reliability of information, whether it is just a passing trend, its benefit to educators, and perceptions of technical difficulty. The document advocates that FOAMed can augment learning when content is presented in a learner-centric, problem-oriented style and knowledge is translated and shared in a social context.
