Class Information: Section number WC1, Online, Central Park Campus
Special Considerations for Online Students: Because this class has no face-to-face component, your primary
method of receiving information will be through text. You must read all course materials thoroughly and carefully.
You also need to check course materials and email regularly (I’d suggest at least twice a week), which naturally
requires a computer with internet access. If you don’t have one at home, I highly recommend choosing a study
location where you can access one (library, home of a friend or relative, etc.) and planning to spend a lot of time
there over the course of the semester. We do not have a strict schedule in which everyone is expected to be online
at specific times, but all students are expected actively participate in class activities.
Technology Requirements: To successfully complete this course, students must have ready access to a computer
with internet access and access to Blackboard. Students should also know how to send emails, attach files to emails
and discussion board posts, and type and save documents in Microsoft Word or a similar word processing
program.
Netiquette: Part of your evaluation will include work done in online class environments (Blackboard and
TurnItIn.com). The activities in which you participate in our online class space should be conducted as if you were
in a classroom. Be courteous to your fellow students and to your instructor. In discussion board posts, emails, and
other online exchanges, I expect you to use the sort of written language I would see in an essay that you would turn
in for a grade: no IM-speak, no slang, no all-caps, no no-caps. I don’t have problems with the occasional emoticon,
but just make sure that everyone can understand the point you are trying to communicate.
Course Description: Intensive study of and practice in the strategies and techniques for developing research
based expository and persuasive texts. Emphasis on effective and ethical rhetorical inquiry, including primary and
secondary research methods; critical reading of verbal, v ...

How This Online Course Works
This course is being offered in a fully online format. This means that all of your course activities will
take place within the Blackboard course. There will not be any specific times when you will have to be
online with your instructor or your classmates during the semester. This gives you the flexibility of
doing your assignments at times during the day when you can be at a computer and work without
distractions. For some students this is early in the morning and for others late at night. An advantage
of online study is that your classroom is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

ed.) Upper Saddle
River, NJ: Pearson Prentice Hall. (ISBN 0-13-271916-9)
(Note: There is a Kindle Edition.)
Required Readings:
Additional articles will be posted in the “Course Materials” section of our Bb classroom.
Recommended Reference:
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th
ed.). (2010). Washington,
D.C.: American Psychological Association.
Course Information:
This course will be conducted as a hybrid, which means it will be partially online. There will be
both in class and online assignments. It will be detailed in this syllabus.
Course Expectations:
When we meet at QC, it is expected that students attend class regularly. When we meet on Bb, it
is expected that students check the Bb forums every other day that week and submit the
homework on the due date. As the instructor, I will be checking the Bb postings almost daily.
Course Description:
Students will apply their understanding of family management and consumer finance to the
solution of specific consumer problems of individuals and families learning to organize and
operate a service dispensing financial information and counseling clients.
Course Objectives:
The student will be able to:
1. Provide information concerning family financial matters to individuals and groups.
2. Develop consumer education programs for various populations.
2. 3. Plan and implement family financial programs.
Course Requirements:
1. On days designated as “Bb”, class will meet online. There will be a weekly homework
assignment based on the reading. This will be your Case Study for that week. This must
be submitted via email no later than 11:59 pm on the class date.
2. Everyone must participate in the weekly discussion board when we are meeting on “Bb”.
A question will be posted and you must respond to the question initially by 11:59pm on
the class date. Then, you must respond to a minimum of 3 postings of your classmates by
the following “Bb” class.
3. Save everything into a MS Word Document first. Then, copy and paste the document
into Black Board. This way if your computer happens to be uncooperative half-way
through your response, then you have not lost your work.
4. On days designated as “QC”, class will meet in Keily Hall 417.
Course Policies:
On days we meet at QC, please check your email after 2pm on class days. If there is a
need for class to be cancelled, you will receive an email from me by 2pm. In this case,
class will meet on Blackboard and the assignment will be detailed.
Attendance is required. It will be taken each time we meet throughout the semester.
Attendance is part of your class participation grade.
All electronic devices that are not related to course work (cell phones, blackberries,
sidekicks, pdas, etc.) must be turned off before entering the classroom. Of course, lap
tops/tablets are permissible for course work. The first infraction of this will result in
10 points deducted from your final grade. Any subsequent infractions will result in
20 points deducted from your final grade.
All assignments must be computer generated. It is required to double space, use standard
margins of no more than 1.25 inches and a font of 12 in either Arial or Times New
Roman. Anything submitted outside of these guidelines will not be accepted. There will
be no exceptions.
All work must be properly cited using the APA (American Psychological Association)
Style. Any act of plagiarism is a violation of the Queens College Academic Policies
and Procedures and will be reported to Queens College Administration for
appropriate disciplinary action.
All work is due on the assigned date. Assignments will be accepted prior to the due date.
After the due date, the grade will be dropped by 10 points per class days late.
Example: Assignment due Wednesday, assignment handed in/emailed, if applicable,
after 8pm on Wednesday; grade will be dropped 10 points. My advice is to hand in items
on time or before the due date and do not work all the way up to the deadline. Computers
and printers have a way of being uncooperative in various ways at the last minute. If an
assignment is emailed, it must be time-stamped by the end of class on the due date for it
to be considered “on time”. A hard copy of the assignment must be handed in by the next
class.
Please feel free to email me with any questions. I check my email daily. I will make
every effort to respond in a timely fashion.
3. Class Participation when we are on campus:
Class participation includes but is not limited to attendance, active class involvement (based on
the assigned readings), written and verbal communication and submitting assignments by the due
date. Professionalism is also required as it pertains to your assignments, peers, guest speakers
and the instructor. Professionalism incorporates proper social etiquette. If you arrive late to
class, Do Not Walk in Front of the Speaker. Your peers and I will not appreciate it. Please
take a seat quietly near the door you have entered from.

Assignment #3 – Financial Current Events
Due: 11/21/12
Part 1(50 points) - Choose a newspaper or magazine article to review. This article should
be from a reputable source such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Money,
Kipplinger’s Personal Finance, Consumer Reports, etc. Write a 1 page review of the article
and include a link to the article on BB for other students to read it. Explain how well this
article informs the reader about the issue. Is this really news or is it a human interest piece?
How is the average consumer to know the difference? What did you learn from this article
that you did not know before? How does the article provoke further thought about this topic?
Or, does it? Does the article send the reader to another source to get more information? If
so, check that source and explain what you have found.
Part 2(50 points) – You are to choose one article posted by one of your classmates. Read
the article and write one paragraph about what you thought about this article.
Assignment #4 – Case Studies
Due: Varied – check schedule
Case studies will enhance our knowledge of financial topics by examining various situations.
They are from the textbook and based on the readings. They vary in length. The ones done
at QC should be handed in hard copy form. The ones due on Bb should be emailed to me.
6. Blackboard Assignments
Due: Weeks we meet on “Bb”
On days designated as “Bb”, class will meet online. There will be a homework
assignment in the form of a Case Study based on the reading. This must be posted on BB
no later than the end of the day (11:59pm) on the class date.
Everyone must participate in the weekly discussion board. You are to read and respond
to a minimum of 3 other postings by the end of class time (11:59pm) on the class date.
Blackboard Assignment Details
There are six (6) Discussion Forum assignments on Black Board (Bb) and they are based on the
assigned readings. There are MS Power Point Slide Shows posted on Black Board to accompany
the chapters that may be helpful. You will be required to post your answers and post a response
to three of your classmates. Additional information for each assignment can be researched on
the Internet. The following is information about writing and posting assignments to Blackboard
and evaluating them.
Writing & Posting Assignments
Assignments vary in length. Please see the specific questions for the details.
Type up assignments in Word (or another word processor) with a 12 pt. font, double
spacing (if necessary), and one-inch margins. If you are using the new Microsoft Word
2007, you should save it as a Microsoft Word 97-2003 version, so others will be able to
open it.
Assignments are due by 11:59pm on the assigned day. Please don’t wait until the last
minute to post assignments.
Post assignments under the appropriate heading and use the title of the assignment
and topic when you post it on Blackboard. For example: Discussion Case1: Chapter
2. This helps the other students identify which assignment you completed and the
topic you wrote about.
Please post your answers directly into the thread you have created for the forum.
Criteria to Evaluate Assignments
Each assignment will be graded using the following criteria:
Clarity and Organization: Your thoughts are clearly conveyed and well organized.
Insight and evidence: Your written assignment demonstrates that you understand the
reading and the posting to which you are responding.
Timely: Assignment is posted on or before the due date and time.
Mechanics: The format described above is followed, especially concerning spelling and
grammar. Please read your work over before submitting it!
7. Online Discussions in the Discussion Board (DB)
Online discussions are part of your overall grade in this class. In order to participate in online
discussions, you must do the following:
Respond to a minimum of three (3) other student’s assignments in the class. Your
response is expected to be intellectual and stimulating in order to promote discussion
among your group members. Responses such as “Great idea!” or “I agree with you!” are
not acceptable! If you agree with them (or not), tell them why.
You must respond back to the people who comment on your assignment. This is how an
online discussion works! Do not wait too long to respond back.
After your assignment is posted to Blackboard, you must log-in for the online discussion
at least every other day until the posted end date (one week after assignment due date).
As the instructor of the course, I will be more of a facilitator in the online discussions. I
will be reading all your assignments, but I may not always comment on them. If you
have not done a good job on your assignment, I will let you know personally through
email. In essence, no news is good news!
Follow the Netiquette Guidelines for all online discussions. These are posted on
Blackboard under Course Documents.
Attaching & Printing Documents in Blackboard
Attaching Documents into Blackboard: It is important to name the file properly before attaching
it. Below are a few file-naming conventions that should be followed:
