1.Introduction
This is the final project of FNBE APRIL 2014. This project is to let us learn
about town planning. We required to study and understand on a town and
design a future livable town of mine. We have to design a town individually
and make a future town model by group.
The thing that I have to do is to do research on town and also research
on ancient, present and future town to inspire me on designing for the new
future town. I also have to learn on how to design a town included the
zonings, transportation link and etc.
I believed that these all we have done can let us gain more knowledge
on BUILT ENVIRONMENT since we investigate about town design and planning
as well. Not only that, we are taught to know more about how a town
planning works in real life(modeling) not just only plan on paper.

2.The Town
2.1 The Town Definition
A town is a population centre that is larger than a village and smaller than
a city. In some cases, "town" is an alternate name for "city" or "village"
(especially a larger village). It is also a built-up area with a name, defined
boundaries, and local government.
2.2 What is the brief history
2.3 What makes a city / town
Generally. the size of the local population and whether the location has
been incorporated or has a local seat of government. The size of each
varies from one country or region to another. In many areas of the world,
as in India at least until recent times, a large village might contain several
times as many people as a small town.
2.4 What makes a good town/ township (guidelines etc)
A good town has to have the following aspects:
• Good connection and accessibility ( transportation)
• Environmental responsibility (sustainability and utilities)
• Innovation and business vitality (zoning)
• Inclusiveness and engagement (urban planning and zoning)
Once the town has achieved these aspects, it will be a successful town in
the world.

2.5 What is the future towns
In my opinion, a future town must more focus on sustainability. Nowadays,
there is too much pollution around us, such as air pollution, water pollution,
land pollution and etc. All of these are just because human did not aware
of the importance of conversing the nature and also the vital of green.
Therefore, the future town must focus on sustainability when planning the
town. Green city will be the theme of the future city to be achieved. Lots
of green technologies will be used on the future town such as green roof,
green wall, more eco-friendly and etc. Not only that, future town should
have included disaster resistant system as well to ensure residents are safe
from disaster.
2.6 What do a town have
A town should have tap water and sewage system and also garbage
removal. Then, a town should provide communication system such as
telephone service and internet. Next, recreational facilities should be
included for residents to provide a better town. Schools, colleges and
universities should be provided for education of the town’s residents. Lastly,
town should provide offices and factories to create work opportunity.

Ancient Cities / towns
THE ANCIENT TOWN – Ancient Akrotiri, SATORINI
3.1 History
Akrotiri -- sometimes nicknamed the "Minoan Pompeii" -- was frozen in
time sometime between 1600 and 1500 B.C. by a cataclysmic eruption of
the island's volcano.
An outpost of Crete, Akrotiri was settled by Minoans as early as 3000
BC and reached its peak after 2000 BC, when it developed trade and
agriculture and settled the present town. The inhabitants cultivated olive
trees and grain and developed sophisticated forms of art and
architecture.

7
3.2 What makes is a significant city and what are the details?
Ancient Akrotiri provides a rare glimpse into urban life in the Minoan
period. Its elaborate architecture and vivid frescoes demonstrate the high
level of culture on ancient Santorini. It has been estimated that the 40
buildings uncovered so far account for only 1/30th of the huge site. Akrotiri
has the impressive building such as three-story houses faced with masonry
(some with balconies) and extensively decorated with frescoes. The best
view of the town as a whole can be had from a triangular plaza near the
exit, where the buildings rise to two stories. From 2000 to 1650 BCE Akrotiri
became more urbanised with paved streets and extensive drainage
systems. Quality pottery was mass produced and decorated with lines,
plants and animals. Metallurgy and other crafts (particularly those related
to the maritime industries) became more specialised.
3.3 Conclusion about the cities
The way they built the town was extremely impressive. The design of streets
and the building along the streets had inspired me much on the town’s
design to connect the streets and design how to settle the building. The
plaza has given a great inspiration on my future town layout too.
3.4 What information or element that you can use to your new future city
The accessibility and connectivity of the ancient town

Present Towns / township
TAIPEI,
TAIWAN
4.1.1 When did it start? History and all
The recorded history of Taipei begun with the Han Chinese settle in the Taipei
Basin in 1709, and lead to the current High-tech capital that is
nowadays Taipei City. Notable others dates are the annexation of Taiwan by
Japan, which made Taipei start its rapid growth, and in the 1950s USA
provided financial help to the ROC's dictatorial but efficient government,
which allowed the city to start a fast structural and industrial growth, leading
to the current high-tech world leadership.
4.1.2What makes is a significant town and what are the details?

Taipei is the most populous city in Taiwan. The area includes a substantial
stretch of the island's northern coastline and surrounds the Taipei Basin, which
makes it the second largest special municipality in Taiwan.
Taipei has great transportation system such as railway, airport and etc.
Passengers who travel by MRT are expected to need no more than 30
minutes to move from any terminal station in the major transportation
corridors to downtown Taipei .Besides, The number of cyclists in Taipei has
reached 170,000, and the city plans to build more bicycle lanes to provide
a safer environment for the growing number of cyclists
4.1.3 Conclusion about the towns
Taipei is a smart town which tried their best to reduce the production of
carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and etc. All of these are just to reduce
pollution of the city. They are trying to reduce the negative effects of the
pollution issue and the sustainability of the city is great enough. These all
are good enough to let us learn from them.
4.1.4 What information or element that you can use to your new town
The transportation system of Taipei gave me a great inspiration to plan a
more convenient transportation link. Good railway system is environmental
friendly and can reduce the usage of vehicles and convenient for
residents. Airports can bring better town.

Copenhagen, Denmark
4.2.1What makes is a significant town and what are the details?
Copenhagen is the capital and most populated city of Denmark.
Copenhagen has over 94,000 students enrolled in its largest universities and
institutions, including the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of
Denmark and Copenhagen Business School. Copenhagen is one of the most
bicycle-friendly cities in the world. It really is biking heaven for the cyclist in
Copenhagen with over 390 kilometres of designated bike lanes. The
Copenhagen Metro serves central Copenhagen together with the S-
train network connecting the outlying boroughs. Serving roughly 2 million
passengers a month, Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup, is the largest airport in
the Nordic countries.
4.2.3 Conclusion about the towns
This city has a great planning and yet it makes the city become successful as
well as gain more populations. The city planning makes more convenient to
people so people will be attracted. I like their cycling lane because this
concept is really helpful to reduce pollution and also can maintain the health
of people.
4.2.4What information or element that you can use to your new town
The bike lane system is great enough to use on my new town.

6 The New “X” Town – The Cape
Case studies on a town on an island
Why do I choose the town on an island ?
I am doing a town on an island because town on island is unique and
easier to develop a brand new town. It can provide unlimited renewable
energy source for the residents due to the unique geographic location
such as wind energy, solar energy, wave energy and etc. These all can
convert into electrical energy and more to generate power for the town
residents.
Important consideration
First of all, building a town on an island is a tough job as we have to consider
a lot of aspects to form a well planed town including
Good connection and accessibility
Environmental responsibility
Innovation and business vitality

13
Good connection and accessibility included the transportation link.
Well-planned transportation is very important to achieve a successful
town. Walkability and circulation must be considered in the town
planning. Bicycle lanes have to be prepared in the town so that the
sustainability achieved. Well planned transportation will have great
connections to make sure residents can access to anywhere in the town
easily and provide a convenient life for them.
Environmental responsibility is one of the main issues of the town planning
recently. Everyone now is mainly focus on the word ‘green’. A green town
with various green technologies is needed to form a more livable town for
the residents. Make sure the town is sustainable and comfortable to live.
The natural unlimited renewable energy sources are provided. The energy
resources can generate into the power which the residents’ needs so it
can reduce the usage of fossil fuels and yet reduce pollution.
Innovation and business vitality is considered as well. The financial of
the town must be planned as well to provide more job opportunities and
so the population will increase. The zoning issue is considered to push the
economics of the town. Economic activities such as agricultural, business,
industrial, tourism, and etc have to plan in the town.
Not only that, the town should have to consider about the security. If
the residents feel unsafe to live in the town, they will move to other places.
Therefore, management of the security is very important. Not only on
criminals, the fire problems and disaster problems have to be concerned
as well so the residents feel secured and can live in the town
comfortablely.

THE CAPE
6.1 How did you came up with the solution to create this new town
The city is too crowed day by day. Therefore, as a responsible mayor, I
will recommend my residents to move to a new town on an island which
named as THE CAPE so that they can have a better life in a livable town
instead of packed in a crowed city
6.2 The aim of the town
The main aim would be livable and sustainability. My town would be
multipurpose but the main purpose is most probably be agricultural and
business. Basic needs are formed on my town. There is a big area of
agricultural land such as farm, oil palm forest and also the industrial area
15. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation

15
as well as habors surrounded my town. The town is a combination of
MARITIME and AGRARIAN (business and agriculture). Not only that, the
centre of the town will have some rooftop garden or farm to let residents
to pant organic fruit and vegetables for themselves for sell it. Besides, the
offices in the town is also playing business role. The habours are big
enough to have international business so people can export and import
product from industry area and also agriculture product to earn income.
There is airport for business and transport usage as well.
6.3 What grid did I use?
I have chosen Radial grid for my town.
The strengths included:
a) Improve accessibility
b) Reduce time taken from one point to one point
The weakness included:
a) The congestion in the centre of the town
6.4 Why town on island?
This can be due to the unlimited renewable energy resources have
attracted me to build a town on an island as there are wind energy,
wave energy, solar energy and etc. Not only that, island will have
beautiful seaside and beaches so tourism industry works then can earn
income.
6.5 What is the important characteristic and elements
It is a town on a cape-shaped island with 28.7km2 and 88,000
populations, I will focus more on accessibility, zoning and sustainability in
the town planning so that my town can be more livable.
