This document outlines expectations for a course, noting that most work will be done outside of class through reading, homework, and asking questions. It suggests turning off electronics and focusing mentally and physically during class. It warns that grades typically drop for each absence and notes the instructor will be on time, prepared, focused, and keep promises about deadlines. In return, it asks what the instructor should expect from students.

2. You will be working on this course more so outside this classroom
than inside (in fact, quite a bit more)
•Reading the text (“did she just say ‘read’?”)
•Doing the suggested homework
•Asking questions when you have them
•Respecting “Murphy’s Law” and not waiting until the last
minute
Suggested homework means you do it…but I don’t have to
grade it! 

3. •Cell phones/pagers off and put away
•IPod off and put away
•Newest, hippest, gotta-have-it gadget off and
put away
Let the outside world do its thing for the
next two hours while we do our thing…

5. …your course grade drops on average 2 to 3
points per absence…that’s in addition to
missing assignments, etc.
Note that “being in class” means being
mentally here as well as physically here.

6. What you expect from me:
•On time
•Prepared for class
•Know what I’m talking
•Stay focused on what we’re doing
•Keep my promises and hand stuff back when I say I
will – no surprises or excuses
So in all fairness, what should I expect from you?
