Non-polar compounds dissolve in non-polar solvents while polar compounds dissolve in polar solvents, such as NaCl in water. Polar compounds are generally soluble in water, especially if they can form hydrogen bonds, like methanol. Inorganic bases like NaOH are soluble due to their ionic nature, while organic bases are soluble in the presence of organic acids due to interactions that form complexes.
