This document provides guidance for resident assistants (RAs) on fire safety procedures. It states that RAs should not use fire extinguishers or attempt to extinguish fires themselves. In the event of a fire alarm, all students including RAs must evacuate and RAs are not expected to re-enter buildings. RAs should help direct students to evacuation points away from buildings and account for residents. Fire drills will occur twice per semester where alarms are activated to practice evacuation; RAs are required to assist and inspect rooms after to ensure evacuation.

2. General Fire Safety
• Residential building are equipped with fire extinguishers. Students are not
expected to use these devices, nor are they trained in their use due to the
risk to their personal safety, which could result from attempting to
extinguish a fire.
• All buildings are also protected by automatic sprinkler systems and are
equipped with automatic fire detection and alarm systems, which are
constantly monitored by campus police.
• Evacuation is mandatory whenever a fire alarm sounds. Fire drills take
place each semester, so that residents can learn the evacuation procedure
and meeting location. RAs are required to assist in fire drills, if their class
schedules permit.

3. Expectations of an RA in the Event
of a Fire
• All students, including RAs, must evacuate the building. RAs are not expected to stay in
the building to alert residents of a fire alarm. If there is a fire alarm in the residence hall,
but RAs are not present, RAs are not expected to return to the residence hall.
• RAs should assist in moving the crowds of students to the appropriate gathering
locations and should help to keep students a safe distance from the buildings.
• If instructed by the Complex Director, RAs should help to make sure that all residents are
accounted for.
• RAs should help ensure that students do not reenter the building until given permission
by the CD, SPD, or fire department.
• RAs should notify the CD of any students that did not evacuate
• RAs should tell CDs if any residents may need assistance leaving the building or if there is
an emotional support animal inside

4. Fire Drills Procedures
• Fire drills are performed two times a semester. Your CD will notify you of the date
and time of the fire drill
– All RAs are required to assist with fire drills, class schedule permitting
• The purpose of fire drills is to make sure that students are aware of proper fire
safety and evacuation procedures in case of an emergency
• During fire drills, the alarm will be activated and RAs will give students an
adequate amount of time to evacuate the building before using a master key to
inspect each room to make sure everyone has evacuated
• While this is not a health and safety inspection, RAs are still obligated to report any
violations to their Complex Director
• A Complex Director will provide the master key for the drills
– Master keys will be used in accordance to the master key usage guidelines

5. Evacuation Points• Direct students to assemble in a pre-determined area away from the building (avoid parking
lots if possible)
– Housing 1 – A & B – located in path around Lake Fred just past Laurel Lane
– Housing 1 – C thru F – located in beach section between Lakeside Lodge and Oasis

– Housing 2 – G thru K – located in the North end of parking lot 7
