Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

2. Dhikr - What is it?
DHIKR is the remembrance of Allah. Every time we think of Allah, do Salaah, recite
Quran, make a Dua, do Tasbeeh, mention Allah in conversation, we are doing Dhikr.
There are also specific ways of doing Dhikr, as the Prophet(sws) taught us.
3. Importance/Benefits of Dhikr
• Allah(swt) says: “O ye who believe! Let not your wealth or your children divert
you from the 'Dhikr' of Allah. If any act thus, the (severe) loss is their
own!” [Surah Munafiqoon, Ayah 9]
• “Those who believe, their hearts find satisfaction in the 'Dhikr' of Allah: for
without doubt, (only) in the 'Dhikr' of Allah do hearts find satisfaction!” [Surah
Raad, Ayah 28]
• “If anyone withdraws himself from 'Dhikr' of (Allah) Most Gracious, We
appoint for him a Shaytaan to be an intimate companion to him! [Surah
Zukhruf, Ayah 36]
• And the Prophet(sws) said: “The difference between the one who remembers
his Lord and the one who does not, is like the difference between a living and
dead body.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 6407]
4. Why every Morning &
Evening?
Because Allah(swt) says in Surah Ahzaab, Ayahs 41-42: “O ye who
believe! Celebrate the 'Dhikr' (Remembrance) of Allah and do this
(as)much (as possible); And glorify Him Morning and Evening.”
5. The Timing of the these
Supplications
1. Opinion 1:
Evening Supplications- From Asr till the Sunsets
Morning Supplications – From Fajr till Sunrise
2. Opinion 2:
Evening Supplications- From Zenith till the Sunsets, with first part of the night
Morning Supplications – From when dawn breaks until the sun passes the Zenith
3. Opinion 3:
Evening Supplications- When Sun passes its Zzenith until halfway through the night
Morning Supplications – From the middle of the night until the time of Zawal
4. Conclusion: All Scholars Agree
The best time for these supplications is between Asr and Maghrib in the evening and
between Fajr and Sunrise in the morning; However, they differed concerning other times
“And glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting.”
Ta-Ha, Ayah 130
“And remember your Lord within yourself with humbleness and fear and without being
loud in speech – in the mornings and the evenings,” Why do we recite certain
supplications a specific number of times? Surah Al-Araf, Ayah 205
6. Why recite it a certain number of times?
• We do not know the reason why, but there is a hidden wisdom in
following the Sunnah, as Allah(swt) says: “Indeed in the Messenger of
Allah you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the
meeting with) Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much.”
[Quran 33:21]
“And if you obey him(saw), you will be [rightly] guided.” [Quran 24:54]
• The Dhikr as taught by Rasul(saw) is enough for us and we should avoid
innovating in matters of worship, as some people like to say, ‘Recite such
and such so many times’, but they have no basis for it.
7. Ayatul Kursi
Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 255
•Recite this:
– Once every Morning & Evening
– After every obligatory Salaah
– Before you go to bed at night
– In your houses
•Benefits/Wisdom:
– You will be under Allah’s Protection till the next Salaah
– Allah will send an angel to protect you till the night is over
– No shaytan or harmful thing will come close to your house
•Proof/Hadith for the above:
1. “Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi at the end of every obligatory salaah, he will be under the protection of Allah till the
next salaah.” [Classified as Hassan by Ibn al-Qayyim, as saheeh by Ibn Baz & as weak by al-Albani]
2. “Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after each Prescribed Salaah, nothing will be standing between him and Paradise
except death.” [Nasai’/Tabarani/classified as sahih by al-Albani]
3. Story of Ubbay bin Ka’b and the jinn: Ubbay bin Ka’b(ra) stated that he used to have a room of dates. He suspected
that some dates were going missing. Thus one night he stood vigil and saw an animal like a young person. Ubbay(ra)
said: “I greeted and received a reply”. I asked, “Who are you? A man or Jinn?” He said, “Jinn. I said, give me you
hand”. He outstretched his hands. I noticed that the hand was like that of a dog. Its hair like the hair of the dog. I
asked, “Are Jinns created like this?” He said, “The Jinns know that there is none among them who is stronger than
me”. I inquired, “Why did you steal?” He replied, “I have come to know that you love to give charity so decided to
take some of your food.
“Ubbay(ra) said: “What will save us from you? He said, ‘Ayatul Kursi which is in Surah al-Baqarah. He who reads it at night
will be saved from our evil till the morning and he who reads it in the morning will be saved from our evil till the
night’.”
Ubbay(ra) said: I went to the Messenger of Allah (sws) in the morning and told him about my story. He(sws) said: “The
evil one has said the truth."[Nasai’/Ibn Hibban Tabarni/Al-Hakim] Lesson: Rasul(sws)’s approval of this made the
reading of Ayatul Qursi every morning and evening a Sunnah.
4. The same story happened to Abu Huraira(ra)except that the shaytan appeared to him in the shape of a man. [Bukhari]
Lesson: Read Ayatul Kursi before you go to bed, Allah will send an angel to protect you till the night is over.
8. The Greatest Ayah in the Quran
Ubayy bin Ka'b (radiAllahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
"Abu Mundhir! Do you know which Ayah in Allah's Book is the greatest? I said: 'Allah and His
messenger know best.' He (peace be upon him) again said: 'Do you know which Ayah in Allah's
Book, according to you, is the greatest?' I (Abu Mundhir) replied: ‘It is 'Allah la ilaha illa Huwal-
Hayyul-Qayyum'.[2:255].
Thereupon he (peace be upon him) patted me in the chest and said, ' Rejoice by your knowledge,
O Abu Mundhir! (i.e, may this knowledge be a source of respect, honour and benefit to
you)'." [Muslim]
The blessings of this verse is apparent from this hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah. He said: The Messenger of
Allah (s.a.w.) put me in charge of guarding the zakaah of Ramadaan. Someone came to me and started
grabbing (taking illegally) handful of the food. I took hold of him and said, ‘I will take you to the Messenger of
Allah (s.a.w.).’ He said, ‘I will teach you some words by means of which Allah will benefit you.’ I said, ‘What are
they?’ He said, ‘When you go to your bed, recite this aayah: “Allah! Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to
be worshipped but He), Al-Hayyul-Qayyoom (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)
…” [Surah al-Baqarah, 2:255]. Then Allah will appoint a guard for you who will stay with you and no Shaytan
(devil) will come near you until morning.’ The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) asked me, ‘What did your prisoner do
last night?’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, he taught me something, and claimed that Allah would benefit me by
it.’ He said, ‘What was it?’ I said, ‘He taught me to recite Aayat al-Kursiy when I go to bed, and said that no
Shaytan would come near me until morning, and that Allah would appoint a guard for me who would stay with
me.’ The prophet (s.a.w.) said, ‘He told you the truth, although he is an inveterate liar. That was the Shaytan’
[narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3101; Muslim, 505].

them after reciting surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he
was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times. [Bukhari]

Proof/Hadith:
1. Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "There are two phrases that are light on the tongue but heavy on the
scale of rewards and are dear to (Allah) the Gracious One. These are, subhanallah wa bi-hamdihi (All Glory is to Allah and all Praise to Him),
and subhanallah al-azim (Glorified is Allah, the Great).'' [Muslim, Bukhari & Tirmidhi]
2. Abu Dharr(ra) reported that the Prophet(sws) said: “'Shall I tell you the words that Allah loves the most?' I said, 'Yes, tell me, O Messenger
of Allah.' He said: 'The words most dear to Allah are Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Glorified is Allah with all praise due to Him)'.” [Muslim
2731]. In a different version: The Messenger of Allah (sws) was asked: ‘What is the best type of speech? He said: “What Allah has chosen for
his angels or His servants: Subhaan-Allahi wa bihamdih”.
3. Jabir reported that the Prophet(sws) said: "Whoever says Subhan-Allah-al-Adheem wa bihamdihi (Glorified is Allah, the Great, with all
praise due to Him), will have a palm tree planted for him in Paradise.'' [Tirmidhi]
4. Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Whoever says, ‘Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,’ one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his
sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea. [Bukhari 6405]
5. Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (sws) as saying: “Whoever recites in the morning and in the evening (this tasbih) one hundred
times, he would not bring on the Day of Resurrection anything excellent than this except one who utters these words or utters more than
these words. [Muslim]
6. Narrated Aisha(ra) that the Messenger of Allah(sws) used to frequently say: ‘Subhaan Allahi wa bihamdihi Astagfirullah was Atoub ilaih.’
She stated: So I said: ‘Oh Messenger of Allah, I see you frequently repeating the following: ‘(the above dhikr)’. So he(sws) said: ‘My Lord has
informed me about a sign that I will see it happening in my Ummah and when I see it; I should keep repeating that statement. I saw this sign:
‘When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest. And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes. Then exalt
[him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.” [Muslim 484]
The sign was the conquest of Makkah as stated in Surah Nasr; and that was revealed as a sign of the coming death of the Prophet(sws). Allah
chose for him(sws) to recite this tasbih as a Mercy as he neared his(sws) death.
7. “Whoever could not perform the night prayer, or could not spend his wealth in the way of Allah, or could not fight his enemy, the let him
recite frequently ‘Subhaan Allahi wa bihmadih’, for verily, it is more beloved to Allah than a mountain of gold spent in the sake of Allah”.

Ayah 143-44]
