Access to Research, Sci-Hub, and the Honor Code: Ethical Dilemmas
Sci-Hub’s mission is to remove barriers to research and knowledge production, particularly for unaffiliated researchers or researchers in developing countries. Yet, recent research suggests that Sci-Hub is also heavily used by researchers on college campuses, which makes this an important issue for the Davidson community to grapple with.
The panel will address several questions, such as: What is ethical for Davidson students to do in connection with Sci-Hub? Stealing is forbidden by the Honor Code, but does downloading papers from Sci-Hub represent illegal or unethical theft? Does the law dictate what’s ethical here, if access to scientific papers is normally restricted exclusively to those who can afford to purchase them, individually or through their school? How are our value judgments influenced by our own privilege and access to information?

What is a research article?
Before we talk about how to find research articles, we have to
agree on what we're looking for. We're looking for scientific
truth. Where do you get it? From a Trustworthy Authority? Give
me a break! (see rant).
Scientific truth resides in research articles. A research article is
one that provides observations or the observed results of
experiments (not merely conclusions) and a description of how
the experiments were performed, in sufficient detail that
someone else might replicate them. You will recognize them by
the detail paid to the methods on which the results were based.
A news report of a scientific finding is not a research article. It
doesn't describe how to do the experiment. A review article is
not a research article. It combines lessons learned from multiple
research articles but, again, does not describe how to do the
experiments it covers.
Strategies to find research articles

• Your favorite search engine may be the fastest way to reach
the article (if you have its exact title). However, if you're
doing this from off-campus, the site you reach will not
recognize your IP address and not realize that you are a
member of the VCU community and thus deserving of the
full text of articles in journals to which VCU subscribes.
•
• VCU library general search facility is an excellent way of
getting most articles. If you are accessing it from off
campus, you'll be prompted for your eID and password if
needed. But no database is perfect, and you may sometimes
need to look elsewhere.
If you don't know the exact title, then:
• Using a search engines is generally a poor strategy -- too
low of a signal-to-noise ratio
•
• Google Scholar is much better but I haven't used it enough
to know how its database compares to others. Note that
Google Scholar allows advanced searches by clicking the
down arrow in the search box.
•
• For greater flexibility, try dedicated services, such as
PubMed and Web of Sciences.
There are two major strategies to use these indexes to find
research articles (plus one general fallback strategy):
• Keyword search: Looks for articles whose titles, abstracts,
or author lists contain a set of words that you supply. Used
by all the sites. This is what you're already used to.

This tutorial will help you build the foundation you need to conduct research in the Ashford
University Library.
For starters, the Ashford University Library is a digital Library.
This means that resources you would find in a physical library such as books, magazines,
journals, and multimedia have been converted into digital formats and stored in databases,
allowing you to access them by going to our webpage on a computer.

As you progress through your courses at Ashford, many of your assignments will require that
you use scholarly resources.
Scholarly resources include scholarly journals, certain books, and other publications.
Scholarly journals are a collections of articles written by scholars or academics in a field of
study, or by someone who has done research in a field.
These articles report original research or experimentation to the rest of the scholarly community.
Before publication, these articles and books go through a rigorous peer-review process, where
other experts in the field review the material for authenticity and reliability.

Resources that are not scholarly are often referred to as popular resources.
Popular resources include things like magazines, newspapers, some websites, and professional
blogs.
They are usually written by journalists or other professional writers and cover topics of general
interest intended to inform and entertain the public. They are reviewed by an editorial staff,
usually for style and format.
Often times, the information in popular sources is reliable, and can be valuable to your research.

Search engines can be great for finding general information, but when you are conducting
academic research, there are several reasons why searching in databases is a good choice.

Find a Dissertation Using WorldCat: A step-by-step guide
- 1. Find a Dissertation Using WorldCat A step-by-step guide
- 2. Step 1 From the library homepage, click on WSU Databases
- 3. Step 2 Select the WorldCat database. Use the “Frequently Used Databases” link, or find it in the alphabetical or drop-down lists.
- 4. Step 3 Select Advanced Search.
- 5. Step 4 Enter your search. Make sure to select title, author, or subject if necessary. Select Thesis/dissertation as the Content.
- 6. Step 5 Sometimes there will be a direct link to the dissertation. Click on the URL to see full-text items in university repositories. If the full text is not available, request item via interlibrary loan.
- 7. Step 6 Click on the title to see the full record of a thesis or dissertation that is not online.
- 8. Step 7 Click the Find it! button.
- 9. Step 8 This will bring up a new window. Click on More Options.
- 10. Step 9 Click to request video from WSU Interlibrary Loan.
- 11. Step 10 Enter the 14-digit code from the back of your WSU ID. Your password is your last name.
- 12. Step 11 Ensure the form is filled out correctly, then click the copyright agreement box, and click GO. In many cases, the form will be blank. Fill in the information from the WorldCat record. * You will receive an email from WSU Interlibrary Loan when your thesis or dissertation comes in. It may be an electronic file or in book form. Electronic files will be attached to the email. You can pick books up at the Circulation Desk.
