Finance in Cornwall 2014
Cornwall Chamber Survey April 2014: The Issues
• Banks give no One-to-One support
• ‘We have to a have a bigger turnover to have a bank manager’
• ‘They’re not interested in lending’
• ‘I don’t want to risk my house as collateral’
• ‘They don’t understand my business’
• They are not sympathetic to my cash flow problems
Finance in Cornwall 2014
British Chambers of Commerce Policy Unit 24.4.2014:
The Solutions
• Financial institutions need a 20 year plan to restore relationships,
transparency and trust
• More competition in the business banking sector needed
• In addition, a strong British business bank willing to take risks where
banks cannot in an era of tight regulation and capital requirements
• A retail SME Bond Market, more mezzanine finance and equity all
have a stronger role to play for growth businesses

Editor's Notes

  • #25 What is funding to be used for versus what the fund is designed to do. Stage of business, risk and source of funding E.g. to buy an asset – asset finance HP/finance, to invest in new operation – grant for job creation?
  • #27 Have the correct box’s been ticked? Records stand up to scrutiny? IP in correct co or still in entrepreneurs name? has IP been registered? Licences correctly executed and legal – do some informal arrangements need to be formalised?
  • #28 Project – standalone to receive grant? Eligible – for grant? Jobs etc?
  • #29 Projections used to assess serviceability – always have to pay (unlike grants/equity) Security available and not locked in elsewhere? valuations Increasingly important not to breach – projections assessment Negotiation of covenants? appropriateness
  • #31 Is there a plan B? Be aware of what funder is looking at and why so you can be prepared when questions arise Often take time – grant panel meetings, debt credit committee, etc – build this into plans
