How are the ages of the characters
represented in this clip?
• The parents in this TV series are presented as middle aged, mainly by the setting,
the fathers attitude and their dress sense.
• The girls father is hostile towards her new boyfriend, which is stereotypically the
attitude a parent (especially male) has.
• His age is represented through his protectiveness. Her mother however, tries to
engage him in conversation by asking about his career etc.
• Because of this, we can tell that she is trying to seem caring and motherly. Both
parents are dressed according to their age.
• Her mam is wearing beige trousers with a pink V neck sweater. Her dad however
is wearing a brightly coloured shirt that perhaps shows he is trying to hold onto his
youth.
• This could possibly show that his age is important to him and he’s in denial about
it. His daughter however is wearing a grey jacket, which contrasts with her dads
bright shirt. Because of this, it could show that she is more mature, despite being
younger.
How are the ages of the characters
represented in this clip?
• The house the parents live in is pristine with gold and white
finishing’s. There is a cabinet of expensive looking liquor in it behind
the white leather settee.
• The dad is also having a glass of whiskey, while he is in conversation
with people.
• The end scene of this clip establishes the importance and wealth of
these two characters.
• The close-up shots of both characters are included to establish their
expressions identifying the tension and anger from the two
protagonists.
Middle aged
• The scene includes the perspective of the middle aged
parents. The negative perspective on their daughters new
boyfriend makes the characters unlikeable, through their
disrespectful attitude towards him, established through
their expressions. Although the daughters boyfriend is at a
similar age range as the parents but he is seen as more
likeable as he is the victim in the scene.
