The team analyzed gold tailings from Barrick Gold's Goldstrike mine using three concentration techniques: magnetic separation, froth flotation, and gravity separation. Magnetic separation initially seemed promising as the gold grade was improved tenfold, but subsequent calculations showed the drying costs were too high. Froth flotation tests were unreliable. Gravity separation resulted in a lower gold grade. However, Barrick provided information on a wet magnetic separation test with promising economic results, including a net present value of $390 million and internal rate of return of 33%.
