Final Project - Leadership and Organizational Behaviour
By Kanchan
Topic 1: LEADERSHIP
1. What happened? What were the results?
Ans: I have been appointed as the Head of Department of Math and IT, Primary Section in
an International school. I got an opportunity to prove myself as a leader of my team. My
confidence was high. As per my experience and priority, I got this opportunity. I had to
conduct the Monthly, weekly department meetings, Micro-teaching for teachers monthly,
collect the lesson plans, year planners, Activity planners, Weekly lesson plans, notebook
corrections, exam Question papers and monitor all these actions too. In teaching field, we
have fixed deadlines for all the submissions of work documents. So I needed to bring that
discipline, time management, creativity, motivation and encouragement in my team. All the
teachers in my team supported me throughout the academic year. We have sorted critical
issues together. E.g. A student was absent for long time and couldn’t complete the notes,
assignments or exams. We have provided material to the student through the email and
helped them to complete the work.
2. Why did this happen?
Ans: My HOD was shifted in the exam department. She had to leave her post of HOD.
3. What class concepts are relevant to this situation?
Ans: Leadership constantly gives challenges to a leader and his/her abilities. These
challenges are helpful to rise to another level, to test yourself and improve in the process,
and to show that you can accomplish something that may seem difficult or even impossible.
There are some types of challenges a leader faces, and suggests some ways in which
leaders can benefit from them.
The leader has to handle external challenges well, that organization probably won't. In
organizations where everyone, from the director to the helper, has a constantly worried look,
and news is passed in whispers. When people feel that leaders are stressed or unsure, they
themselves become stressed or unsure as well, and the emphasis of the group moves from
its mission to the current worrisome situation. The work of the group suffers. Here external
challenges can be the parent’s concerns about their child studying in the school.
It's always very difficult for leaders, to admit that they might have personality traits or
personal characteristics that interfere with their ability to reach their goals. Part of good
leadership is learning to accept the reality of those traits, and working to change them so
they don't get in the way. For me, internal challenge was the power to convince my team for
the timely submissions of the work allotted. I struggled and learned that to convince them I
need to set an example for them by completing the work on time.
4. What did you learn from this?
Ans: I learned from this situation and the leadership that people always look at the leader
as an example. So, Setting an example was important. If you want others in the group to
show mutual respect, to work hard, to embrace the vision and mission of the organization, to
include everyone in their thinking and decisions, you have to start by doing those things
yourself, and behaving in the ways you want others to behave. A leader who yells at people,
consults no one, and assumes his word is law will intentionally or unintentionally train
everyone else in the group to be the same way. A leader who acts collaboratively and
inclusively will create an organization that functions similarly.
