Final personal evaluation
Second period

After having studying for several years, now I am facing a quite important experience which is
helping me to improve in my course of studies, in my job and in personal aspects as well. Moreover, the
practicum offers the opportunity to integrate all the learning experiences and knowledge from the
previous years. Anditis also orientedtothe constantreflection of thepracticum itself in ordertoimprove.
Regarding the aims involving this kind of experience I believe that it provides teacher trainees
opportunities to observe classes, reflect on them and analyze them, to participate and to practice in real
situations. Also, trainees have the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge that they have acquired
during their course of studies. I also think that this kind of experience is mostly based on reflection.
Constantly, trainees are asked to observe and reflect about all the situations experienced in the classroom
and in my opinion this kind of exercise is essential to learn since reflection is a process of interpreting
experiences togain newunderstanding.
Before I started the practicum in primary I was feeling quite confident since I knew the students
from previous years and currently I am teaching at primary schools. However, I think that this was my
mistake number one, because I should never forget that every experience is different, no matter ifstudents
orthe schoolis thesame.
Moreover, my personal goals for this experience were to be able to connect the knowledge learnt
during my course of studies to the practicum itself, tobeabletoprovidestudentstheopportunitytoenjoy
the classes, to provide them more usage of the language to communicate, to discover my own
development and the most important one, to keep learning. I believe that in this kind of profession we
never stop learning so it was very interesting to observe other teacher’s classes and to be observed by the
tutorwhoprovided very useful feedback.
Nevertheless, the observation in this practicum were very interesting since after analyze them, I
could notice that, in my opinion, there were a lot of aspects to improve. For example, the teacher and
students communicate in L1, the disorganization of the class itself, the disorganization of the classroom,
among others. I could observe that there were not routines; students did not know what was expected
from them; in moments where the teacher explained the exercises not all students were paying attention,
so then they did not know what they had to do; the lacking of classroommanagementstrategiessuchasto
ask for students silence; the constantly teacher and students translation of the vocabulary and the lack of
context.
Regarding my classes, there were all based on the communicative approach which defines goals
leaded by communication in context through conversation, reading, listening comprehension and
writing. What is more, the activities that we worked with were all presented in context and they were
motivating for them, since we worked with monsters, robots and a familiar Disneycharacter. Thelastclass
was also based on CLIL approach (Content Language Integrated Learning) which includes the teaching of
content and language as well. Moreover, the main aims were that students were able to identify that we
grow and change in similar ways but we are all different, and what healthy habits contributes to that
growing. I believe that the aims were achieved and students had the opportunity to communicate in a
meaningful and significant context.
Concerning classroom management, I applied several strategies such as rhymes and songs to ask for
silence, to ask for students to sit down and to catch their attention. They wereveryuseful! Ialsoincludeda
routine where we danced and sang a hello song and a days of the song (in my personal opinion they are
essential!). I could also notice that students enjoyed moving around, so I addedseveralactivitiesandgames
thatincluded movement.
As my previous practicum, I think that I have learnt a lot becauseIhadtheopportunitytoreflecton
my own development and I could notice what aspects I have toworkoninordertobecomebetterteacher.
I realized that I have to improve in quite a few aspects like time management, pronunciation, giving
instructions and checking them, and I should move more around the classroom. I realized about this
throughmytutorfeedback and whenIwrote theself-assessment report.
In addition, I think that this experience was meaningful to me because I could comprehend that it
does not matter if I have some experience teaching English or with a particular group, I should never take
things for granted. Even though I am not satisfied with some aspects of my own performance during this
practicum, it was very useful to realize what aspects I need to work on. Furthermore, I think that I am not
satisfied because I made some mistakes that I usually do not do. For example, I remember that in a class I
did not revise some specific vocabulary (as it was in my planning) and then I asked students to complete a
“true or false” activity containing that vocabulary. I think that this happened because I was quite nervous
since my tutorwasthere observingme.
In conclusion, I feel that this experience was an eye opener one, since as I stated above, I could
analyze my own development and reflect on my own performance as well. I know that I have a lot to
improve but I could realize that I did not take feedback in a bad way or in a personal way; I liked the fact
thatIcan assimilate mymistakes ina positive wayin ordertoimprove andbecome a betterteacher.
