Medical Technology Tackles New Health Care Demand - Research Report - March 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) predicts that with, against, despite, and even without the global pandemic, the medical technology (MedTech) industry shows signs of continuous healthy growth, driven by smaller, faster, and cheaper devices, growing demand for home-based applications, technological innovation, strategic acquisitions, investments, and SPAC listings. MCG predicts that this should reflects itself in annual growth of over 6%, well beyond 2028.
According to Chris Mouchabhani, Managing Partner at M Capital Group, “Despite all economic scenarios that one may consider, beyond overall economic shocks, medical technology should remain one of the most promising and robust sectors over the short to medium term and well beyond 2028.”
There is a movement towards home-based care for the elderly, next generation scanning and MRI devices, wearable technology, artificial intelligence incorporation, and online connectivity. Experts also see a focus on predictive, preventive, personalized, participatory, and precision medicine, with rising levels of integration of home care and technological innovation.
The average cost of treatment has been rising across the board, creating additional financial burdens to governments, healthcare providers and insurance companies. According to MCG, cost-per-inpatient-stay in the United States alone rose on average annually by over 13% between 2014 to 2021, leading MedTech to focus research efforts on optimized medical equipment at lower price points, whilst emphasizing portability and ease of use. Namely, 46% of the 1,008 medical technology companies in the 2021 MedTech Innovator (“MTI”) database are focusing on prevention, wellness, detection, or diagnosis, signaling a clear push for preventive care to also tackle costs.
In addition, there has also been a lasting impact on consumer and medical demand for home care, supported by the pandemic. Lockdowns, closure of care facilities, and healthcare systems subjected to capacity pressure, accelerated demand away from traditional inpatient care. Now, outpatient care solutions are driving industry production, with nearly 70% of recent diagnostics start-up companies producing products in areas such as ambulatory clinics, at-home care, and self-administered diagnostics.

CRISPR-Cas9, a revolutionary gene-editing tool, holds immense potential to reshape medicine, agriculture, and our understanding of life. But like any powerful tool, it comes with ethical considerations.
Unveiling CRISPR: This naturally occurring bacterial defense system (crRNA & Cas9 protein) fights viruses. Scientists repurposed it for precise gene editing (correction, deletion, insertion) by targeting specific DNA sequences.
The Promise: CRISPR offers exciting possibilities:
Gene Therapy: Correcting genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis.
Agriculture: Engineering crops resistant to pests and harsh environments.
Research: Studying gene function to unlock new knowledge.
The Peril: Ethical concerns demand attention:
Off-target Effects: Unintended DNA edits can have unforeseen consequences.
Eugenics: Misusing CRISPR for designer babies raises social and ethical questions.
Equity: High costs could limit access to this potentially life-saving technology.
The Path Forward: Responsible development is crucial:
International Collaboration: Clear guidelines are needed for research and human trials.
Public Education: Open discussions ensure informed decisions about CRISPR.
Prioritize Safety and Ethics: Safety and ethical principles must be paramount.
CRISPR offers a powerful tool for a better future, but responsible development and addressing ethical concerns are essential. By prioritizing safety, fostering open dialogue, and ensuring equitable access, we can harness CRISPR's power for the benefit of all. (2998 characters)
CHAPTER 1 SEMESTER V - ROLE OF PEADIATRIC NURSE.pdfSachin Sharma
Pediatric nurses play a vital role in the health and well-being of children. Their responsibilities are wide-ranging, and their objectives can be categorized into several key areas:
1. Direct Patient Care:
Objective: Provide comprehensive and compassionate care to infants, children, and adolescents in various healthcare settings (hospitals, clinics, etc.).
This includes tasks like:
Monitoring vital signs and physical condition.

Offering breastfeeding and childbirth support.
Counseling families on safety and injury prevention.
3. Collaboration and Advocacy:

Objective: Advocate for the rights and best interests of their patients, especially when children cannot speak for themselves.
This includes tasks like:
Communicating effectively with healthcare teams.
Identifying and addressing potential risks to child welfare.
Educating families about their child's condition and treatment options.
4. Professional Development and Research:

Objective: Contribute to improving the quality of care for children by participating in research initiatives.
This includes tasks like:
Attending workshops and conferences on pediatric nursing.

The dimensions of healthcare quality refer to various attributes or aspects that define the standard of healthcare services. These dimensions are used to evaluate, measure, and improve the quality of care provided to patients. A comprehensive understanding of these dimensions ensures that healthcare systems can address various aspects of patient care effectively and holistically. Dimensions of Healthcare Quality and Performance of care include the following; Appropriateness, Availability, Competence, Continuity, Effectiveness, Efficiency, Efficacy, Prevention, Respect and Care, Safety as well as Timeliness.
Defecation
Normal defecation begins with movement in the left colon, moving stool toward the anus. When stool reaches the rectum, the distention causes relaxation of the internal sphincter and an awareness of the need to defecate. At the time of defecation, the external sphincter relaxes, and abdominal muscles contract, increasing intrarectal pressure and forcing the stool out
The Valsalva maneuver exerts pressure to expel faeces through a voluntary contraction of the abdominal muscles while maintaining forced expiration against a closed airway. Patients with cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, increased intracranial pressure, or a new surgical wound are at greater risk for cardiac dysrhythmias and elevated blood pressure with the Valsalva maneuver and need to avoid straining to pass the stool.
Normal defecation is painless, resulting in passage of soft, formed stool
CONSTIPATION
Constipation is a symptom, not a disease. Improper diet, reduced fluid intake, lack of exercise, and certain medications can cause constipation. For example, patients receiving opiates for pain after surgery often require a stool softener or laxative to prevent constipation. The signs of constipation include infrequent bowel movements (less than every 3 days), difficulty passing stools, excessive straining, inability to defecate at will, and hard feaces
IMPACTION
Fecal impaction results from unrelieved constipation. It is a collection of hardened feces wedged in the rectum that a person cannot expel. In cases of severe impaction the mass extends up into the sigmoid colon.
DIARRHEA
Diarrhea is an increase in the number of stools and the passage of liquid, unformed feces. It is associated with disorders affecting digestion, absorption, and secretion in the GI tract. Intestinal contents pass through the small and large intestine too quickly to allow for the usual absorption of fluid and nutrients. Irritation within the colon results in increased mucus secretion. As a result, feces become watery, and the patient is unable to control the urge to defecate. Normally an anal bag is safe and effective in long-term treatment of patients with fecal incontinence at home, in hospice, or in the hospital. Fecal incontinence is expensive and a potentially dangerous condition in terms of contamination and risk of skin ulceration
HEMORRHOIDS
Hemorrhoids are dilated, engorged veins in the lining of the rectum. They are either external or internal.
FLATULENCE
As gas accumulates in the lumen of the intestines, the bowel wall stretches and distends (flatulence). It is a common cause of abdominal fullness, pain, and cramping. Normally intestinal gas escapes through the mouth (belching) or the anus (passing of flatus)
FECAL INCONTINENCE
Fecal incontinence is the inability to control passage of feces and gas from the anus. Incontinence harms a patient’s body image

One of the foremost advantages of dedicated home care lies
in its ability to enable older adults to remain in the comfort
of their familiar surroundings, fostering greater happiness
and joyful experiences in their daily lives. This advantage is
particularly valuable as it uplifts their spirits and fortifies
their resolve to conquer illness, leading to a speedier and
more sustainable recovery. Research demonstrates that
patients recuperate more effectively and rapidly from
surgeries and illnesses when they convalesce in the
reassuring environment of their own homes.
Furthermore, home care serves as a means to integrate into
your loved one's care plan. By engaging a capable home
care service provider, you gain direct and timely access to
your loved one's care, ensuring continuous updates on their
care processes and progress.

In the end-of-life phase, disabled and elderly individuals
often yearn to spend their remaining days in the familiar
comfort of their own homes, surrounded by loved ones.
However, caregiving responsibilities can take a toll on the
emotional well-being and physical stamina of those
providing support.
During such challenging times, Comfort Keepers® steps in
to alleviate stress by providing assistance to loved ones
within the household which helps provide emotional and
moral support to families. Collaborations with medical
providers and hospice agencies ensure that the necessary
care is accessible and tailored to individual needs.
While families find it difficult to entrust the well-being of
their loved ones to capable hands and receive high-quality
in-home care, Comfort Keepers' caregivers maintain
constant communication with the seniors' family members.
This approach grants families peace of mind, knowing that
their cherished family member is being genuinely cared for.
Pioneering the Future of Senior Care
A significant portion of the senior population possesses the
ability to live independently, provided they receive a certain
level of daily assistance.
With the baby boomer population projected to double by
2060, there is a strong preference among this demographic
to age in place rather than seeking hospital-based care.
They seek non-medical care options that enable them to
maintain their independence and mobility.
By continuously embracing advancements in technology
and tailoring their services to meet the evolving needs of
seniors, Comfort Keepers® stands as a symbol of
innovation in senior care.
Taking this as a growth opportunity, Comfort Keepers®
continues to invest in learning and development—through
custom Comfort Keepers’ courses, brainstorming sessions,

high-standard quality care and meet the “independence”
needs of senior care effortlessly.

those seeking to get involved in senior care, Ramzi says,
“This is a business that should be focused on each
individual client and caregiver, as well as each individual
business owner. To succeed in this growing industry, one
should look for a program that equips the owners with the
required support resources to foster their growth journey,

A Glimpse into the CEO's Journey
19. n the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, home care
Ihas emerged as a pivotal aspect of providing
personalized and convenient services to individuals in
need. With advances in technology and a shift in focus
towards patient-centric care, the future of home care is
shaping up to be a game-changer.
Let’s delve into the emerging trends that are transforming
the way we approach home-based healthcare.
Telehealth and Remote Monitoring
One of the most significant trends in the realm of home care
is the widespread adoption of telehealth services and remote
monitoring tools. Thanks to the power of the internet and
mobile devices, healthcare professionals can now connect
with patients remotely, offering consultations, monitoring
vital signs, and providing timely advice. This not only
enhances accessibility but also ensures that patients can
receive necessary care without leaving the comfort of their
homes.
Personalized Care Plans
Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all healthcare solutions.
The future of home care revolves around personalized care
plans tailored to individual needs. Healthcare providers are
leveraging data analytics and artificial intelligence to assess
patients’ health status, lifestyle, and preferences. By
understanding these factors, caregivers can create
customized care plans that address specific requirements,
leading to more effective outcomes and improved patient
satisfaction.
Emerging
Trends
17 | Oct 2023 www.insightscare.com
20. Integration of Wearable Devices
Wearable devices, such as smartwatches and fitness
trackers, are becoming integral to home care. These devices
can monitor various health metrics, including heart rate,
sleep patterns, and physical activity. By integrating
wearable technology into home care, healthcare providers
can gather real-time data, enabling them to track patients’
progress and detect potential issues early on. This proactive
approach not only enhances patient safety but also
empowers individuals to actively participate in their
healthcare journey.
Virtual Reality Therapy
Virtual reality (VR) technology is revolutionizing the way
home care services are delivered, particularly in the field of
rehabilitation and mental health. VR therapy sessions can
simulate real-life scenarios, helping patients recover from
injuries, manage chronic pain, or cope with mental health
challenges. By immersing patients in a virtual environment,
therapists can create engaging and interactive experiences,
making the healing process more enjoyable and effective.
This innovative approach to home care is not only
therapeutic but also opens doors to new possibilities in
healthcare interventions.
Home Automation and Assistive Devices
The integration of home automation and assistive devices is
another trend that is reshaping home care. Smart home
technology allows individuals with disabilities or chronic
conditions to control various aspects of their home
environment, such as lighting, temperature, and security,
using voice commands or mobile apps. Assistive devices,
ranging from mobility aids to medication dispensers,
enhance independence and safety for patients requiring
home-based care. These advancements promote a sense of
autonomy and improve the overall quality of life for
individuals receiving home care services.
Focus on Mental Health Support
The importance of mental health support in-home care
cannot be overstated. Recognizing the significant impact of
mental health on overall well-being, healthcare providers
are placing a stronger emphasis on addressing
psychological needs. Therapists and counselors are now
offering virtual counseling sessions, support groups, and
mindfulness exercises to patients in the comfort of their
homes. By prioritizing mental health support, home care
services are becoming more holistic, addressing both the
physical and emotional aspects of a patient’s health.
Enhanced Training for Caregivers
As home care becomes more sophisticated, caregivers are
receiving enhanced training to meet the evolving needs of
patients. Training programs focus not only on medical skills
but also on empathy, communication, and cultural
competence. Caregivers are taught to understand the unique
backgrounds and preferences of the individuals they assist,
fostering a compassionate and respectful environment.
Well-trained caregivers play a crucial role in ensuring that
patients receive high-quality, personalized care, thereby
enhancing the overall effectiveness of home-based
healthcare services.
In conclusion, the future of home care is undoubtedly
bright, marked by technological advancements,
personalized approaches, and a strong focus on holistic
well-being. Telehealth services, personalized care plans,
wearable devices, virtual reality therapy, home automation,
mental health support, and caregiver training are key trends
that are shaping the landscape of home-based healthcare.
These innovations not only improve accessibility and
convenience but also empower patients to actively
participate in their healthcare journey, leading to better
outcomes and an enhanced quality of life. As these trends
continue to evolve, the future of home care holds the
promise of a more patient-centered, efficient, and
compassionate healthcare experience for individuals in
need.

In an interview with Insights Care, Bill Cook, the
Executive Vice President of Business Development at
BioPlus shares in depth about the company's commitment
towards enabling specialty pharmacy experience for its
customers.
Following are the excerpts from the interview:
Brief us about BioPlus and its inception story.
BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy was originally founded in
1989 by Stephen Vogt, Pharm.D. when he aimed to create a
better way to serve the needs of patients. At that time, Dr.
Vogt was in practice as a clinical pharmacist for metabolic
support at a Florida Hospital, caring for patients being
nourished only through an IV in a hospital setting. To
improve patient quality of life, he created a home infusion
pharmacy to provide home treatment for these patients,
which no other company was doing at that time.
Over time, Dr. Vogt’s vision for this company was re-
imagined as it became a national specialty pharmacy with a
new name: BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy. Dr. Vogt’s goal for
a specialty pharmacy was to give patients the best possible
therapy outcomes by setting up individual pharmaceutical
treatment plans for each patient under his care. This
commitment to patient care served as the driving mission of
the company as it grew to become the #1 independent
specialty pharmacy in the country.

31. hen choosing a home care provider for yourself
Wor a loved one, the decision is never easy.
Entrusting someone with the well-being of a
family member is a significant step, and it’s essential to find
a provider who not only meets the basic requirements but
also possesses qualities that foster trust and assurance.
In this article, we will explore the essential qualities to look
for in a home care provider, ensuring you make an informed
decision and create a supportive, comfortable environment
for your loved one.
Empathy and Compassion
Empathy and compassion are the cornerstones of quality
home care. A compassionate caregiver understands the
emotions and struggles the individuals under their care face.
They not only provide physical assistance but also offer
emotional support, kindness, and a listening ear. Empathetic
caregivers put themselves in their client’s shoes, fostering a
sense of understanding and connection beyond the surface
level of care.
Patience and Understanding
Caring for individuals with diverse needs requires an
abundance of patience and understanding. A patient
caregiver remains calm under pressure, allowing them to
handle challenging situations gracefully and with
composure. Whether dealing with a client’s medical
condition or assisting them in daily tasks, a patient
caregiver takes the time to understand the specific
constraints of each individual, ensuring a supportive and
stress-free environment.
Building Trust in
Home Care
29 | Oct 2023 www.insightscare.com
32. Reliability and Consistency
Reliability is a fundamental quality in any home care
provider. Clients must trust that their caregiver will arrive
on time and consistently provide the necessary care. A
reliable caregiver adheres to schedules, medication timings,
and daily routines, instilling confidence in their clients and
families. Consistency in care routines helps individuals feel
secure and enables them to maintain a sense of normalcy in
their lives.
Flexibility and Adaptability
Every individual is different, and their needs can change
unexpectedly. A flexible and adaptable caregiver is quick to
adjust their approach based on their clients’ evolving
requirements. They are open to feedback and are willing to
modify their caregiving techniques to enhance the
preferences and comfort levels of individuals under their
care. Being adaptable ensures clients receive personalized
care catering to their specific needs and preferences.
Clear Communication Skills
Effective communication establishes trust between clients,
their families, and caregivers. A caregiver with clear
communication skills can articulate information concisely,
ensuring clients understand their care plans, medications,
and routine changes. They are also active listeners, taking
the time to understand the concerns and preferences of their
clients. Transparent and open communication fosters a
sense of trust and creates a comfortable environment where
clients feel valued and respected.
Professionalism and Respect
Professionalism is a non-negotiable quality in any
healthcare provider. Caregivers should approach their work
with high professionalism, maintaining confidentiality and
upholding ethical standards. Respect for the dignity and
autonomy of those they care for is crucial. A respectful
caregiver values the preferences and choices of their clients,
treating them with dignity and ensuring they have control
over their own lives and decisions.
Experience and Expertise
Experience and expertise are valuable assets in the realm of
home care. Experienced caregivers have encountered
various situations and challenges, equipping them with the
knowledge and skills to handle diverse maintenance needs
effectively. While formal qualifications are essential,
practical experience often provides insights and problem-
solving abilities that can significantly impact the quality of
care provided.
Empowering Independence
Empowering independence is a crucial quality to look for in
a home care provider. A caregiver who encourages and
supports their clients in maintaining their autonomy fosters
a sense of self-worth and confidence. Instead of doing
everything for the individual, they focus on enabling them
to perform tasks to the best of their abilities. This approach
preserves the individual’s dignity and enhances their overall
quality of life. A caregiver who empowers independence
promotes a positive self-image, ensuring clients feel
capable and in control of their lives, even when they require
assistance. By nurturing this sense of autonomy, caregivers
contribute to the emotional well-being of their clients,
fostering a positive and empowering environment within
the home.
In conclusion, choosing a suitable home care provider is a
decision that requires careful consideration and
consideration of these essential qualities. By selecting a
caregiver who possesses these qualities, you can ensure that
your loved one receives the necessary physical assistance
and emotional support, respect, and understanding.
Building trust with a home care provider creates a positive
and nurturing environment, enhancing the overall well-
being and quality of life for those needing care.
