Case Study #5 for UTCM Report #08-14-03 "Making Mobility Improvements a Community Asset: Transportation Improvements Using Context-Sensitive Solutions"
The TOD Study presented yesterday looked carefully at land use and transportation patterns, and then suggested the general contours for a reshaped downtown. Six potential development clusters were identified, including: the North Avenue Gateway (between Memorial Circle and I-95), the Central Corridor (between I-95 and the Metro-North tracks), Crossroads (the heart of the downtown, near the intersection of Huguenot and North), the West Gateway (where Huguenot and Main meet near Pintard), the East Gateway (around Echo Bay and Faneuil Park), and the I-95 Gateway (near the end of Palmer Avenue.)
The planned Route 20 shared use path that will better connect Charlottesville to the Piedmont Virginia Communiity College campus, Saunders-Monticello Trail and beyond. This presentation was given by Jessica Hersh-Ballering from the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission on a virtual meetup hosted by Peter Krebs from The Piedmont Environmental Council. April 2, 2020.

2. SOWWAH SQUARE , Abu Dhabi UAE
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY The inspiration for the square was derived from the nature and culture inherent to the Arabian Peninsula: dunes, traditional irrigation systems (falaj), oases, bedouin textiles and the popular use of formal clipped hedges in the United Arab Emirates, drawing connections with the French baroque château gardens”
This merging of ideas is represented in a contemporary design created a sustainable, cool and protected micro climate for users and a dynamic kaleidoscope of planting and patterned paving on the ground

The Midway Crossings project is a series of streetscape improvements at the major intersections of Ellis, Woodlawn, and Dorchester Avenues reaching from 59th to 60th Streets.
The design is inspired by the original Frederick Law Olmsted concept of the Midway Plaisance as water link between Washington Park and Jackson Park with bridges traversing the Midway. Key design elements include lighting masts, railing and retaining walls providing sidewalk-level lighting, and landscape elements separating pedestrians from vehicular traffic.

1. PARK EXTENSION
The green roof of the bridge creates an ex-
tension of the parks green space and breaks
up the hard edges of the bridge structure.
FORM
The Plicated Bridge is the direct result of a divided
site. This division creates an unique opportunity to con-
nect the site through a multi-functional structure while
keeping to the limits of work outlined in the competition.
URBAN TERRAIN PARK
The bridges folded topography allows for a
wide variety of active recreation year round. The
bowl shape of the amphitheater and folding wall
act as a half pipe for skiers and snowboarder.
FITNESS
A series of paths that are usually used to
connect users with all aspects of the park
can also serve as a training site for fitness
enthusiast.
MOVIE NIGHTS
The folding wall converts to a movie screen
at night. This ensures that the park is loaded with
activity from the early morning to late evening.
SUNDOWN IN THE CITY
Another function of the plicated wall is
to be used as a modified bandstand.
This would provide a venue for the sundown
in the city concert series that used to be held
in Market Square down in downtown Knoxville
INSIDE THE FOLD
The voids that are created by the bridge connecting
the divided site can serve as commercial space housing
sporting equipment rentals, light-rail station, cafe, ect.
