CENTRAL PARK SKATE PARK: THEMING + IDEATION
INTRODUCTION
This report is used to portray the proposed design theming of the
Central Park Skate Park redevelopment.
The plan shown is indicative and is used to help visually demonstrate
the conceptual theming. Project theming has taken inspiration from
the local agricultural industry and its influence on the regions land-
scape character which will be symbolically represented in the design
through shapes, forms, materiality and layout. The project theming will
create a space that is site specific and provide the Bundaberg commu-
nity with a truly unique skate park.
ICONIC LOCAL LANDSCAPE & PRODUCE
Bundaberg is one of the largest fresh produce regions in Queensland,
largely due to the region’s rich red volcanic soil and near-perfect grow-
ing conditions, it has become world renowned for it’s quality produce.
This can first be seen along the roads that lead into Bundaberg; lined
with agricultural land where the disturbed soils have spread their
iconic rich red colour onto the surrounding asphalt. This exposed soil
is scattered about by wind and rain leaving nearby roads, farm houses
and other surroundings stained in an organic red colour.
The project’s design will reflect the rich agricultural industry in the
region by exploring the unique and vibrant colour of the soil and the
varieties of produce that it enables to grow. These elements will be
reinterpreted and re-imagined to develop a set of design principles
that directly inform the recreation program, material selection, colour
palettes, form and pedestrian movements through and around the
site. The adjacent imagery highlights local agricultural features and
forms that will influence the design principles for the redevelopment
of the Bundaberg Central Park Skate Park.

AGRICULTURAL LANDS AND PRODUCE.
RICH RED SOILS:
The rich red soils will be represented in the
design by a vibrant red concrete deliberately
contrasting against the lighter concrete tones of
the active skate areas. This represents the dis-
turbed soil of the local agricultural land staining
the clean grey concrete as it permeates into the
space. This red colour will define a pedestrian
network through the facility and indicate safe
paths of travel.
ORGANIC ORANGE HIGHLIGHTS:
Digging beneath the soil unearths some of the
regions rich produce. The region’s ginger is made
world famous by the‘Bundaberg Brewed Drinks’
company. These golden coloured root crops are
symbolically represented through the organic
orange shapes and tones layered throughout
the design. Complementing the surrounding red
perimeter these internal orange forms further
communicate the layers beneath our feet that
cultivate the regions iconic produce.
PASSIVE GREEN POCKETS:
Passive green relief from the harsh concrete will
be scattered across the facility to reflect the rich
vegetation that flourishes in the subtropical
climate amongst the layers of rich soils. These
allow the concrete expanse to be broken up
and provide refuge areas from the heat and will
include seating, shade and other supporting
amenity. Bottle trees will compliment the amen-
ity and provide an iconic vertical element to the
facility not found anywhere else in reference to
Bundaberg’s bottling industry.

THEMING IDEATION PLAN
CENTRAL PARK SKATE PARK: IDEATION
2. SKATE AREA CAPACITY AND
ZONING
To respond to the communities request for zoning,
the skate park’s functional design has been ar-
ranged into areas to allow opportunities for all skill
levels to feel safe and comfortable riding the skate
park. The skate park has been divided into several
zones to allow use by everyone, even during busy
periods.
1. Transition Area - Intermediate/Advanced
2. Transition Area - Beginner
3. Street Area - Beginner/Intermediate
3. ACCESS, REFUGE AND AMENITY
Pedestrian access and refuge areas allow for clear
and easy access to the peripheral of the facility
providing seating and viewing spaces not only for
riders to hangout with their friends or rest but also
provide parents, spectators and other passive users
an opportunity to be included within the space.
Proposed trees have been included to break up
larger areas of hardscape and provide shade to
reduce reflection and give some respite for riders
in the hot local climate. It is important that tree
species selected minimise the drop of leaf, fruit and
seeds on the skate park as this can be detrimental
to its functionality.
To bring a unique aesthetic and feel to the facility,
the access and refuge areas are indicated by a sharp
transition in colour. This will help define clear active
and passive users creating safe separation between
the two user groups.
4. THEMING AND IDENTITY
Bundaberg is one of the largest fresh produce re-
gions in Queensland, largely due to the region’s rich
red volcanic soil and near-perfect growing condi-
tions.
The roads leading into Bundaberg are lined with
agricultural land where the disturbed soils have an
iconic rich red colour. This exposed soil is scattered
about by wind and rain leaving roads, farm houses
and everything in its path stained red.
This idea has been applied to the skate park where
the red soil has permeated and stained the edges
of the facility. The‘staining’has been used to define
the pedestrian and refuge areas through a vibrant
red concrete which will indicate safe paths of travel
for pedestrians around the facility contrasting
strongly against the concrete of the active skate
area.
1. SITE RESPONSIVE LAYOUT
The proposed facility has been located to take best
advantage of the existing site features.
• Running the skate park parallel to the exist-
ing busy road will allow best opportunities
for passive surveillance from passers by while
maintaining easy direct access from the existing
carpark
• Working with the natural fall of the site without
building up large mounds will allow views to be
maintained across the facility and into the sur-
rounding parkland
• The design of the space utilises the existing ma-
ture trees to take advantage of existing natural
shade opportunities.

CENTRAL PARK SKATE PARK: LANDSCAPE PRECEDENTS
LANDSCAPE PALETTES & PRECEDENTS
The facility has been designed and inspired by the unique location of
the current skate park and the surrounding natural agricultural en-
vironment; predominately the vibrant soil layers and the produce in
which it cultivates.
The landscape design draws inspiration from the organic forms found
within the agricultural lands and surrounds as well as directly including
bottle trees which references the local bottling of the regions produce.
The bottle trees break up the concrete expanse and provide much sort
after shade in areas of refuge.
Creating vibrant spaces and places within our neighbourhoods and
urban realm results in more liveable cities and towns. These places can
greatly affect the way we respond to the places we inhabit. Layers of
vibrant colour and detailing will reflect local landscape and industry as
well as informing spatial programming and pedestrian movement that
creates a unique and iconic identity for the facility, providing a more
social and habitable public urban realm.
Echoing local culture and location, this will provide a bespoke and
unique destination for the youth of the region that not only provides a
highly functional skate park but gives a sense of place and engenders
pride in the local community and future users of the space.

SKATE AREA CAPACITY AND ZONING To respond to the communities request for zoning, the skate park’s functional design has been ar- ranged into areas to allow opportunities for all skill levels to feel safe and comfortable riding the skate park. The skate park has been divided into several zones to allow use by everyone, even during busy periods. 1. Transition Area - Intermediate/Advanced 2. Transition Area - Beginner 3. Street Area - Beginner/Intermediate 3. ACCESS, REFUGE AND AMENITY Pedestrian access and refuge areas allow for clear and easy access to the peripheral of the facility providing seating and viewing spaces not only for riders to hangout with their friends or rest but also provide parents, spectators and other passive users an opportunity to be included within the space. Proposed trees have been included to break up larger areas of hardscape and provide shade to reduce reflection and give some respite for riders in the hot local climate. It is important that tree species selected minimise the drop of leaf, fruit and seeds on the skate park as this can be detrimental to its functionality. To bring a unique aesthetic and feel to the facility, the access and refuge areas are indicated by a sharp transition in colour. This will help define clear active and passive users creating safe separation between the two user groups. 4. THEMING AND IDENTITY Bundaberg is one of the largest fresh produce re- gions in Queensland, largely due to the region’s rich red volcanic soil and near-perfect growing condi- tions. The roads leading into Bundaberg are lined with agricultural land where the disturbed soils have an iconic rich red colour. This exposed soil is scattered about by wind and rain leaving roads, farm houses and everything in its path stained red. This idea has been applied to the skate park where the red soil has permeated and stained the edges of the facility. The‘staining’has been used to define the pedestrian and refuge areas through a vibrant red concrete which will indicate safe paths of travel for pedestrians around the facility contrasting strongly against the concrete of the active skate area. 1. SITE RESPONSIVE LAYOUT The proposed facility has been located to take best advantage of the existing site features. • Running the skate park parallel to the exist- ing busy road will allow best opportunities for passive surveillance from passers by while maintaining easy direct access from the existing carpark • Working with the natural fall of the site without building up large mounds will allow views to be maintained across the facility and into the sur- rounding parkland • The design of the space utilises the existing ma- ture trees to take advantage of existing natural shade opportunities. 2. 1. 3.
  • 4. CENTRAL PARK SKATE PARK: LANDSCAPE PRECEDENTS LANDSCAPE PALETTES & PRECEDENTS The facility has been designed and inspired by the unique location of the current skate park and the surrounding natural agricultural en- vironment; predominately the vibrant soil layers and the produce in which it cultivates. The landscape design draws inspiration from the organic forms found within the agricultural lands and surrounds as well as directly including bottle trees which references the local bottling of the regions produce. The bottle trees break up the concrete expanse and provide much sort after shade in areas of refuge. Creating vibrant spaces and places within our neighbourhoods and urban realm results in more liveable cities and towns. These places can greatly affect the way we respond to the places we inhabit. Layers of vibrant colour and detailing will reflect local landscape and industry as well as informing spatial programming and pedestrian movement that creates a unique and iconic identity for the facility, providing a more social and habitable public urban realm. Echoing local culture and location, this will provide a bespoke and unique destination for the youth of the region that not only provides a highly functional skate park but gives a sense of place and engenders pride in the local community and future users of the space.
