Diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning. Diagnostic assessments are given at the beginning of a course to determine strengths and weaknesses. Formative assessments are ongoing and inform instruction. Summative assessments are given at the end to evaluate learning over time and include selected or constructed responses.
