Any tool that gets used every day suffers damage. Every surface that is rubbed and bashed every day needs a cover over at some point. Tables, the walls in hallways, teeth, all are in use every day and all suffer wear and tear. Tables sometimes need to be re-varnished, hallways regularly need repainting and every now and then the plaster needs reskimming. Teeth can benefit hugely from veneers when the chips, cracks and stains are too much to bear.

Composite fillings and tooth-colored fillings provide an alternative to silver fillings that is more conservative and preserves more tooth structure. They are made of composite resins that are bonded directly to the tooth, sealing it better than silver fillings. Other cosmetic dental procedures like inlays, onlays, bonding, and porcelain veneers can also improve the appearance of teeth by repairing chips, cracks, gaps, and staining or straightening misaligned teeth for a natural looking smile.
Bridges are a way to replace missing teeth using existing teeth as anchors. The process involves shaping the existing teeth as bases, taking a mold, and creating a custom bridge with crowns on each end and a replacement tooth in the middle. A temporary bridge is worn until the permanent one is ready. The permanent bridge is fitted and bonded in place, and may take a few days to feel natural. Bridges restore both function and appearance of missing teeth.
The grills are temporary or permanent decorative tooth covers and are mostly made out of precious metals. The permanent grills can pose a problem for oral hygiene. With continuous use, it can also cause gum irritation or an allergic reaction. If you are using grills, then properly brush & floss your teeth. Opal is a delicate gemstone that can be damaged by scratches or hard impacts more easily than other stones like emerald. It must be handled carefully and protected from abrasives, extreme temperature changes, chemicals, and makeup in order to avoid damage. Opal forms through silica spheres sticking together over time, and its color comes from the different sizes of spheres reflecting different wavelengths of light. Proper care and avoidance of potentially damaging activities can help opals withstand adverse conditions without chipping or breaking.
Inlays and onlays are partial crowns used to strengthen teeth by restoring their shape and preventing further damage. An inlay is used for minor damage not affecting the tooth's cusps, while an onlay is for more extensive damage. The procedure involves removing decay, taking a mold, and creating a porcelain, gold, or composite restoration off-site that is cemented into place two to three weeks later, with a temporary restoration in the meantime.

This document discusses determining the age, height, and weight of horses by examining their teeth and physical characteristics. Key points include:
- Horses' ages can be estimated by examining patterns of tooth eruption and wear over time and developmental stages of the teeth.
- A horse's height is measured in hands, with one hand equaling 4 inches, and is measured from the ground to the highest point of the withers.
- A horse's weight can be measured using a scale, weight tape, or estimated via a body weight formula based on height and body characteristics.

Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms on teeth and can harden into tartar if not removed daily by brushing and flossing. Plaque and tartar increase the risk of cavities, gingivitis, and periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease that can lead to bone and tooth loss. To prevent plaque buildup, it is important to brush teeth twice a day, floss daily, and see the dentist regularly for professional cleanings and checkups.

Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body but can be destroyed by acid and plaque buildup, leading to tooth decay. Foods and drinks with a pH level below 5.5 can cause erosion and decay, as the acid demineralizes enamel. Children are especially at risk of early decay due to bottle feeding with sugary liquids and lack of brushing. Frequent acid exposure from foods and drinks damages enamel over time if the mouth does not have enough time to neutralize acidity through saliva and remineralize enamel. Maintaining good oral hygiene through brushing and regular dental checkups can help prevent tooth decay.
The document discusses tooth decay, its causes, and how to prevent and treat it. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth that feed on sugars and starches, producing acid that destroys enamel. It can be prevented by brushing and flossing daily, limiting sugary foods and drinks, and visiting the dentist regularly. Treatment options for decay include fillings, crowns, extractions, or root canals, depending on the severity. Maintaining good oral hygiene is the best way to stop tooth decay.

Dental restorations are used to replace or repair missing or damaged tooth structure. There are metallic restorations like amalgam, gold, and stainless steel that appear radiopaque on x-rays, as well as non-metallic options like composite resin and porcelain. Amalgam looks white or light on x-rays and can sometimes leave fragments in soft tissue. Gold appears as smooth, radiopaque contours and porcelain shows up slightly radiopaque. Other materials include post and cores, bases, and temporary stainless steel. Bridges use crowns on abutment teeth and a false tooth to close gaps, while crowns and veneers are used to restore a single tooth.
These are replacement roots of teeth that give a durable foundation for both fixed or removable replacement teeth that go well with the appearance of your natural teeth.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells made of porcelain that are bonded to the front of teeth. They can transform a dull smile and last over 20 years if cared for properly. Veneers are a good option for slightly misaligned or discolored teeth and usually require only minimal tooth structure removal. Good candidates have experienced tooth damage or cracking. Regular brushing and visits to the dentist are needed to ensure veneers remain in good condition.
Dental fillings or Dental Restoration is a procedure of treating the decayed tooth or the tooth having cracks or the tooth that is worn out in time. The abnormalities that need to be filled in to avoid further infection or problems.
Dental Fillings are of two types Direct Fillings and Indirect Fillings.

A comprehensive lecture comparing the Types, Properties and Clinical applications of different types of artificial teeth used in denture making.
For more lectures on Dental materials follow Dr Rashid Lectures on Dental Materials on Facebook (dmbydrrashid)
Artificial teeth, which are a main component of dentures, can be made of either acrylic or porcelain materials, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Acrylic teeth are lighter, easier to adjust, and bond chemically to the denture base, while porcelain teeth are harder, more durable, and resist staining but are prone to cracking and making clicking sounds. The document discusses the ideal properties, composition, fabrication, advantages, and disadvantages of both acrylic and porcelain artificial teeth used in dentures.
There are several options for dental fillings to treat cavities and damaged teeth. The main types are amalgam, gold, composite resin, porcelain, and glass ionomer. A dentist can help a patient understand the details of each type, including effectiveness, longevity, and cost, so they can choose the best filling for their needs and preferences. Common factors to consider include appearance, durability, and whether the filling is suitable for front teeth or molars.
Teeth that are yellow are not common in dental care. Many patients experience the yellow color of their teeth. One of the most obvious ways to tell if your teeth are colored differently is to contrast with other teeth. It's not often that all of your teeth change color in a uniform manner.
The document discusses dental crowns, which are restorations used to cover damaged or missing teeth. Crowns can be necessary due to injuries from sports, hard candy or falls, or issues like tooth decay. Crowns are made from various materials like metal alloys, porcelain, or resin, with the material depending on factors like the tooth's condition and aesthetic needs. While crowns protect teeth, they still require proper care and can have issues like discomfort, chipping or falling out if not fitted correctly. The document encourages scheduling an appointment with Shumway Dental Care to discuss options for damaged teeth.
The document discusses dental cavities, including what they are, how they form, risk factors, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options. Cavities are holes in teeth caused by tooth decay from bacteria in the mouth interacting with sugars. They start small in the enamel and get deeper over time. Risk factors include diet, saliva flow, and genetics. Cavities are often diagnosed through dental exams and X-rays. Treatment focuses on prevention through diet and hygiene, remineralization of small cavities, and restoration of larger cavities with fillings or other procedures.
Dental sealants are plastic coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth to protect the deep grooves from decay. They are applied after the permanent molars and premolars have erupted, and can last for many years, helping to prevent cavities. Dental sealants are clear or white and are applied using acid etching and light curing to bond to the tooth surface.

Dental implants are the most common type of method for replacing the missing tooth. Unlike dentures or bridges, implants are surgically placed in the jawbone. In layman’s terms, a dental implant is similar to the natural root of the tooth. It offers a stable foundation for the artificial tooth giving it the look, feel, and function similar to the natural tooth.
Breast cancer: Post menopausal endocrine therapyDr. Sumit KUMAR
Breast cancer in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) status is a common and complex condition that necessitates a multifaceted approach to management. HR+ breast cancer means that the cancer cells grow in response to hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This subtype is prevalent among postmenopausal women and typically exhibits a more indolent course compared to other forms of breast cancer, which allows for a variety of treatment options.
Diagnosis and Staging
The diagnosis of HR+ breast cancer begins with clinical evaluation, imaging, and biopsy. Imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI help in assessing the extent of the disease. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining of the biopsy sample confirm the diagnosis and hormone receptor status by identifying the presence of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) on the tumor cells.
Staging involves determining the size of the tumor (T), the involvement of regional lymph nodes (N), and the presence of distant metastasis (M). The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system is commonly used. Accurate staging is critical as it guides treatment decisions.
Treatment Options
Endocrine Therapy
Endocrine therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for HR+ breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The primary goal is to reduce the levels of estrogen or block its effects on cancer cells. Commonly used agents include:
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): Tamoxifen is a SERM that binds to estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen from stimulating breast cancer cells. It is effective but may have side effects such as increased risk of endometrial cancer and thromboembolic events.
Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs): These drugs, including anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane, lower estrogen levels by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens to estrogen in peripheral tissues. AIs are generally preferred in postmenopausal women due to their efficacy and safety profile compared to tamoxifen.
Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators (SERDs): Fulvestrant is a SERD that degrades estrogen receptors and is used in cases where resistance to other endocrine therapies develops.
Combination Therapies
Combining endocrine therapy with other treatments enhances efficacy. Examples include:
Endocrine Therapy with CDK4/6 Inhibitors: Palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib are CDK4/6 inhibitors that, when combined with endocrine therapy, significantly improve progression-free survival in advanced HR+ breast cancer.
Endocrine Therapy with mTOR Inhibitors: Everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, can be added to endocrine therapy for patients who have developed resistance to aromatase inhibitors.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is generally reserved for patients with high-risk features, such as large tumor size, high-grade histology, or extensive lymph node involvement. Regimens often include anthracyclines and taxanes.

5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT or Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that serves a range of roles in the human body. It is sometimes referred to as the happy chemical since it promotes overall well-being and happiness.
It is mostly found in the brain, intestines, and blood platelets.
5-HT is utilised to transport messages between nerve cells, is known to be involved in smooth muscle contraction, and adds to overall well-being and pleasure, among other benefits. 5-HT regulates the body's sleep-wake cycles and internal clock by acting as a precursor to melatonin.
It is hypothesised to regulate hunger, emotions, motor, cognitive, and autonomic processes.
PGx Analysis in VarSeq: A User’s PerspectiveGolden Helix
Since our release of the PGx capabilities in VarSeq, we’ve had a few months to gather some insights from various use cases. Some users approach PGx workflows by means of array genotyping or what seems to be a growing trend of adding the star allele calling to the existing NGS pipeline for whole genome data. Luckily, both approaches are supported with the VarSeq software platform. The genotyping method being used will also dictate what the scope of the tertiary analysis will be. For example, are your PGx reports a standalone pipeline or would your lab’s goal be to handle a dual-purpose workflow and report on PGx + Diagnostic findings.
The purpose of this webcast is to:
Discuss and demonstrate the approaches with array and NGS genotyping methods for star allele calling to prep for downstream analysis.
Following genotyping, explore alternative tertiary workflow concepts in VarSeq to handle PGx reporting.
Moreover, we will include insights users will need to consider when validating their PGx workflow for all possible star alleles and options you have for automating your PGx analysis for large number of samples. Please join us for a session dedicated to the application of star allele genotyping and subsequent PGx workflows in our VarSeq software.

GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS AND GASTRITIS
Osvaldo Bernardo Muchanga
Gastrointestinal Infections
GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS result from the ingestion of pathogens that cause infections at the level of this tract, generally being transmitted by food, water and hands contaminated by microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, Rotavirus among others that are generally contained in feces, thus configuring a FECAL-ORAL type of transmission.
Among the factors that lead to the occurrence of gastrointestinal infections are the hygienic and sanitary deficiencies that characterize our markets and other places where raw or cooked food is sold, poor environmental sanitation in communities, deficiencies in water treatment (or in the process of its plumbing), risky hygienic-sanitary habits (not washing hands after major and/or minor needs), among others.
These are generally consequences (signs and symptoms) resulting from gastrointestinal infections: diarrhea, vomiting, fever and malaise, among others.
The treatment consists of replacing lost liquids and electrolytes (drinking drinking water and other recommended liquids, including consumption of juicy fruits such as papayas, apples, pears, among others that contain water in their composition).
To prevent this, it is necessary to promote health education, improve the hygienic-sanitary conditions of markets and communities in general as a way of promoting, preserving and prolonging PUBLIC HEALTH.
Gastritis and Gastric Health
Gastric Health is one of the most relevant concerns in human health, with gastrointestinal infections being among the main illnesses that affect humans.
Among gastric problems, we have GASTRITIS AND GASTRIC ULCERS as the main public health problems. Gastritis and gastric ulcers normally result from inflammation and corrosion of the walls of the stomach (gastric mucosa) and are generally associated (caused) by the bacterium Helicobacter pylor, which, according to the literature, this bacterium settles on these walls (of the stomach) and starts to release urease that ends up altering the normal pH of the stomach (acid), which leads to inflammation and corrosion of the mucous membranes and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
In addition to bacterial infections, gastritis and gastric ulcers are associated with several factors, with emphasis on prolonged fasting, chemical substances including drugs, alcohol, foods with strong seasonings including chilli, which ends up causing inflammation of the stomach walls and/or corrosion. of the same, resulting in the appearance of wounds and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
Among patients with gastritis and/or ulcers, one of the dilemmas is associated with the foods to consume in order to minimize the sensation of pain and discomfort.
