Ferdinand I was King of Romania from 1914 until his death in 1927. He succeeded his uncle Carol I as king when Carol died without an heir. During Ferdinand's reign, Romania's territory greatly expanded after World War I to include Bessarabia, Bukovina, and Transylvania following military victories and the dissolution of empires. Ferdinand was crowned King of this newly enlarged Romanian kingdom in 1922 in a ceremony in Alba Iulia, Transylvania. He died of cancer in 1927 and was succeeded by his grandson Michael under a regency council that included Ferdinand's son Nicholas.
