The female reproductive system plays many vital functions that ensure the continuation of the human race.
 
What’s involved? This system consists of both internal and external genitalia or reproductive organs.  The internal genitalia are located in the pelvic cavity  Breasts The internal genitalia  consists of : the uterus Two ovaries Two fallopian tubes  The vagina (extends to the external surface of the body)
The function of the female reproductive System The female reproductive system produces ova (the female reproductive cell) Provides a location for fertilization and growth of a baby Secretes female sex hormones The breast produce milk to nourish the newborn.
 
The Vagina A muscular tube, lined with mucous membrane that extends from the cervix of the uterus to the outside of the body.  During intercourse, the vagina receives the male’s penis and semen. Serves as a birth canal that the baby passes through in a normal delivery.
The Ovaries Small almond-shaped glands that produce ova and the female sex hormones located on both sides of the uterus within the pelvic cavity. In charge of ovulation and producing the female sex hormones. The hormones are responsible for getting the lining of the uterus prepared for a fertilized ovum.
Uterus Hollow pear-shaped organ that contains a thick muscular wall, a mucous membrane lining, and a rich supply of blood. Houses the fetus and contractions to the walls propels the baby during delivery through the birth canal in a normal delivery
Fallopian Tubes Also called the uterine tubes or oviducts Propels the ovum from the ovary to the uterus so that it can implant Where Fertilization takes place normally
Breasts and lactation Produces milk to nourish a newborn Size doesn’t enable ability to breastfeed Milk is produced by the lactiferous glands and carried out to the nipple by the lactiferous ducts. The areola is the pigmented area around the nipple.
