Adding Feelings in Our
Writing!
Brought to you by the emotions from Inside Out
Why add feelings?
• So your reader can understand
what is happening with the
characters in your story.
• They help the readers stay
engaged with your story.
• They help the reader
understand the problem and
the solution in your story.
So how do we add
feelings into our story?
Let’s ask the emotions and find out…
Joy
• Situation: Joy finds out she
won the lottery!
• Boring sentence: “I felt happy I
won the lottery!”
• Instead, what would Joy be
doing to show she’s happy?
Sadness
• Situation: Sadness find out her
pet cat ran away.
• Boring sentence: “I felt sad that
my cat ran away.”
• Instead, what would Sadness
do to show she was unhappy?
Anger
• Situation: Anger had to stay
inside and do chores on a
beautiful Saturday.
• Boring sentence: “I’m so mad I
have to do chores today!”
• Instead, what would Anger do
to show he was angry?
Fear
• Situation: Fear saw a ferocious,
hungry bear standing three feet
in front of him!
• Boring sentence: “I’m so
scared of this bear!”
• Instead, what would Fear be
doing to show he was afraid?
Disgust
• Situation: Disgust smelled
three week old garbage that
Joy forgot to take out (again).
• Boring sentence: “That
garbage is disgusting!”
• Instead, what would disgust do
to show she was disgusted?
Remember, show (don’t tell) your
characters’ feelings and emotions!
Thanks for watching!
