After completing my final cut of my music video, I presented it and received
feedback on its strengths and weaknesses. Comments are received about the
positive aspects of my music video include:
 Variety of shot types and attention to image composition/framing,
 Stylish performance element - original and unique,
 Good controlled use of lighting and shadows,
 Well timed introduction of scenes including darkness and matches,
 Effective use of soft focus on the fire (intentional?),
 Good attention to mise-en-scene with costumes,
 evidence of competence editing - matching movements to the music,
 editing to beats and multi-image editing in the woods sequence
I think that a lot of this positive feedback is accurate towards what I was
attempting to create. Specifically, I am pleased that it was noted that my editing
matched movement to music, as this was something I spent a large amount of
time focussing on.
Some constructive comments included:
 Relies on an active audience - messages may be lost on
passive/mainstream ones.
 Long (duration) shot of holding hands,
 Is there a purposeto the rewind? Or is it just being used as a 'filler'?
 Caterpillar? Confused about what the symbolism/purpose of these shots
are? Is it about growth and change... or was it just a nice shot of a
caterpillar?
In responseto these comments, I have some thoughts. Firstly, before going
ahead with my project, I was aware that an abstractidea without a clear
narrative would rely on the audience to actively understand and interact with
messages and themes. The shot of the pair holding hands is deliberately long to
show their love and relationship as everlasting. If it is too long, then that could
be improved. The rewind shot of the pair in the car is used to link to the lyrics
"That's just how it is", after just seeing the pair interact with each other linked to
the lyrics "I'll introduce you to, My eyes, my lips, my hair" and how their
relationship would begin. The shot I used of the Caterpillars not used for growth
or change, but instead to represent care. The lyrics "Treat me like fire" suggests
caution and awareness, and so as the caterpillar is picked up carefully in the
hand of the boy, it symbolises care and attentiveness. If audiences have other
interpretations of the shot, this is still ok for the video.
