3. 1. SYSTEM OF PLAY : INITIAL AND
DURING THE GAME
- Classic 4-3-3, which the defensive phase transform in 4-1-4-1
(the wings support the midfielders).
If they are winning or are happy with the draw, the system of
play does not change.
If are losing, enters another striker for one of the intern
midfielders. In this situation they change the system in anarchic
4-4-2. This system is based only on crosses for the 2 strikers.
If the strikers are blocked from the opposite, they risk a offensive
transition of the opponent , thanks to the minor number of
players in midfield.
*STYLE OF PLAY:
-The style is based on fast counter attacks and fast play on the
opposite midfield. Don't prefer possession of the ball ,but are
obsessed with the offensive transitions. Every action is svilluped
on the flanks(lateral parts of the pitch) and very in rare occasions
attack throw the central part of the pitch.
-The stoppers are very slow and don't participate in construction.
-The two fullbacks attack often, especially Cacciatore on the right
side. Their offensive movements are covered from Donati (the
median).
-In the midfield, Donati is the ''conductor'' who catalyze the
actions to the wing positions. The other's two midfielders are
often participating in offensive phase (with movements without
ball, from behind) with the two wings ,looking for the passes and
empty spaces that Toni creates for them. They four players are
crucial for the offensive transitions.
-Toni is the target for every player. They are looking him very
often and every action depends of him.

5. 2. INDIVIDUAL CHARATERISTICS BY
POSITION
GOALKEEPER:
RAFAEL :very agile goalkeeper, a good organizer of the
defense and good with foot.
CENTRAL DEFENDERS
MARQUES and MORAS : Man marking . Strong physically and
dominant in aerial duels. Technically poor and slow. They suffer
again fast strikers or if don't have anybody to mark
RIGHT FULLBACK
CACCIATORE : good technically and in aerial duels. Often
send good crosses for Toni. Good in all two phases, but suffers
defensive duels 1vs1. Often attacks to the right wing.
6. LEFT FULLBACK
ALBERTAZZI : central defender ,moved to the left side thanks
to Mandorlini. Doesn't support often the offensive phase ,his
duties are much bigger in defensive phase. Slow player ,who
suffers defensive duels 1vs1.
THE MEDIAN
DONADEL or DONATI : players with similar characteristics.
Technically and Physically good. In defense ,covers the central
defenders and the fullbacks. In offense his duty is to construct the
actions.
RIGHT INTERN MIDFIELDER
ROMULO : polyvalent player, who can also play like a right back
and right wing. The technique is indiscutable ,but his strong side
is the resistance. In offensive phase, attacks the space from behind
and participate in offensive transitions.
7. LEFT INTERN MIDFIELDER
HALLFREDSSON : very good technically, with duty of
Advanced Playmaker, who dictates the tempo and changes the
play from one side on another. Good in shoots from distance.
RIGHT WING
ITURBE : technically , the best player in the squad. Fenomenal
acceleration, fenomenal in dribbling, in 1vs1 situation, good
shoots from distance. Suffers in defensive phase, doesn't respect
his duty to cover the right flank and often leaves Cacciatore
alone.
LEFT WING
JANKOVIC : technic and talent very good , but he is very
anarchic in tactical aspects. Easy for provocate (difficult
temperament)
8. STRIKER
TONI : target man. Born goalscorer. Very slow and poor agility
(thanks to his age). If he is blocked ,the whole team is blocked
and suffers in offensive phase.
SUBSTITUTIONS :
MARTINHO : Left wing, fast technical player, very good in
offensive 1vs1 situations. Often enters for Jankovic
JUANTINO : wing, good with both legs. If they are winning
enters for Iturbe or Jankovic. If they are losing plays like second
striker in 4-4-2.
CACCIA : striker with similar characteristics of Toni, but poor in
aerial duels. He also plays the second striker in 4-4-2
9. 3. WEAK DEFENSIVE SIDES :
1. Big space between the defensive and midfield line (central
hole)
2. Poor defensive transition, giving the opportunity to the
opponent to create a fast offensive transition.
3. The fullbacks suffer defensive duels 1vs1 (without the help
of the wings)
16. Poor defensive transition, giving the
opportunity to the opponent to
create a fast offensive transition.-

duels 1vs1 (without the help of
the wings) - VIDEO
18. 4. WEAK OFFENSIVE SIDES:
1. Everything depends of Luca Toni. If he is blocked ,every
offensive creation is blocked. Don't have plan B.
2. Don't attack centrally. If they attack, thanks to their
technical difficulties ,easily are losing the ball ,giving the
opportunity for opposite offensive transition

20. 5. GOOD DEFENSIVE SIDES:
1. Superiority in aerial duels
2. Compact and short (4-1-4-1)
3. The wings are helping in defense.
Superiority in aerial duels
27. 6. GOOD OFFENSIVE SIDES:
1. Attack on the flanks
2. Vertilac / diagonal crosses for L.Toni (target man)
3. Offensive transition supported from the intern midfielders
from behind
37. 7.1. SET PIECES : ‘’DEFENSIVE’’
*CORNERS
-Man marking , only Toni defend the first post and another
player stops the short passes. One of the wings stay up
front for eventual offensive transition
40. *FREE KICKS
а) LATERAL :
- One or two player/s in the wall. The others are marking
on zone. One of the wings stays up front for eventual
offensive transition
б) FRONTAL :
- Four or five players in the wall. The others are marking
on man. One of the wings stays up front for eventual
offensive transition.
LATERAL FREE KICKS
44. 7.2 SET PIECES : ‘’OFFENSIVE’’
*CORNERS :
-A specific scheme for offensive corners.
Toni,Moras,Marques and Cacciatore are positioned one behind
another (escaping the opposite man marking). All of them attack
/start together. One attacks the near post, other the far post, and
the other two attack centrally (they switch position frequently).
Other two players wait on the line of 16 metres for eventual
shoots from distance and construction of new action.
47. *FREE KICKS
а) LATERAL:
-They attack with 5/6 players. One attacks the first post,
other the 11 metres area and the others 3/4 the second
post. Often crossed on the second post or 11 metres area.
They are dominant in aerial duels
50. - The leadership of Mandorlini interconnected with his tactical
ideas, has created one very very dangerous squad ,who scares
the big teams too. His leadership make a career progression on
three groups of players.
1. A lot of players ,who two years before played in Serie B and
C1, have succeeded to show their potential in Serie A (
Hallfredsson, Marques, Juanito, Rafael ).
2. Young talented players, in which the big teams didn't
believed. (Iturbe- Porto , Albertazzi-AC Milan, Romulo-
Fiorentina ).
3. ''Old'' players ,in which nobody believed because their
career is over. Only Mandorlini believed in them. (Toni,
Donati, Moras).
