Pattern of Play – Releasing a Central Midfielder
Phase One Phase Two
2. Max Rogers – Midfield Support Component 2 UEFA B Licence
Phase One
All midfielders start high in order to create space in the deeper positions, closer to
their own goal.
The trigger for this pattern is the movement deep from both the wide midfielder and
the nearest central midfielder.
A second after these two players make their run, the striker on the right hand side
then moves into a deeper position to receive the pass.
Phase Two
The movement by the two midfield players creates the opportunity for the striker to
receive the ball with only one defender nearby, whilst it also creates spaces between
the lines that will be exploited.
As the ball travels to the striker, as soon as it passes by the central midfielder he
quickly spins back towards the striker in anticipation of receiving a lay off.
As the striker lays the ball inside to the supporting central midfielder, the second
striker moves across to the right hand side in order to create space for the second
central midfielder who advances forwards.
Phase Three
The ball is passed slightly ahead of the second central midfielder so he can run onto
the pass at speed.
Supporting runs are made by both wide midfielders and a striker looking to finish off
any rebounds.
Phase 3
