We all have that moment in life that changes us in some ways. I think back at events in my life,
as an example the births of my children that caused me to grow into a mother and the woman I
am today. However, there is a moment in my life, after my children, I was psychologically lost.
This moment changed my life forever! I was married for thirteen years with five children. During
these thirteen years, I would be the head of the house hold and ensured structure in the house. My
husband at the time, was an addict and in/out of prison. We attempt counseling and all types of
treatment. The last six years together, we were very involved in church. My faith in God grew
and I believed my husband could be delivered from this addition. I had to be the strong one in the
family, the rock, the foundation of our house to give the perception to people we were okay.
After trying everything possible, I realized, only he can be in recovery of addiction, I cannot
make him. I had to make the decision to break up my family for the safety of my children. After
my separation, I became angry. My faith was questionable, and I was angry at God. My family
was torn, we lived with a friend in a small room. My step children had to live with their mom
because I could not afford to keep them. I no longer felt strong, or had structure in my house. The
feeling of failure and the mourning of the loss of my family was overwhelming. I began to drink
alcohol every day. My daily routine would consist of going to work and as soon as I got out I
would stop and get a Smirnoff Black, go home, cook for the three kids, leave work out, drink
and go out, go home at two am. The next six months, I did not care about anything or anyone. I
allowed these feelings to consume me. In September 2013, the first week, I was driving drunk, I

Alice McLoughlin Doro, Downers Grove South High School Introduction:
Mrs. Alice McLoughlin Doro is a Special Education teacher at Downers Grove South High
School in Downers Grove, Illinois. The community is known for its excellent school districts.
According to the 2010 census there were 47, 833 people living in Downers Grove with
approximately 19,000 households and 13,000 families. The racial makeup of the school was
reported to be 88% White, 3% African American, 5% Hispanic, 0.2% American Indian or Alaskan
Native, 5% Asian, and 1.6% from two or more races. About 1.7% of families were below the
poverty line. The school district report card reports the following racial/ethnic background for the
school: 68.1% White, 10.3 African American, 11% Hispanic, 7.3% Asian, 0.2% American Indian,
and 3.2% two or more races. The elementary schools, middle schools, and high school all perform
very well academically receiving above state average scores on standardized tests. She has been
working there for 10 years and is currently a Case Manager of 17 students, all with an IEP, all
with different needs and goals in the LD department. She co teaches two general education classes
in English intervention, all freshman. Although she is a Special Education teacher, she works with
all the students. She also teaches a READ 180, Tier 3 reading and english intervention. This is

The role of the Social worker is varied as it involves the facilitation of change and empowerment
of the individual through social, cultural and environmental influences. Between 1910 and 1970,
the role of the social worker was significant due to the impact of the Stolen Generation on
Australian society. The Stolen Generation was a dark period in the Australian history where
many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were often taken without consent from their
homes and families by the government, police and welfare authorities. The children were taken
from their homes in order to try to civilize them by assimilation into white society (McCarthy
2000). The impacts of this period often resulted in severe psychological consequences for the
children, the loss of identity, social isolation, depression, alcohol abuse and an increased level of
violence. The role of the Social Worker was significant during this period as they were often
involved with removing children from their homes and were also required to participate in the
reconciliation process to improve the relationships between Indigenous peoples and the wider
Australian community. One of the lasting effects of this practice is the distrust of indigenous
people towards the social welfare profession. Traditionally, Social Workers are seen as human
rights workers who advocate for the people to ensure equal access to all services by ensuring

damaged because of his actions and he cannot take back what he did to Linda.
Linda is often seen repairing her expensive, silk stockings whenever there is something damaging

determined that fifty three had died by Jumping from the eighth, ninth, and tenth floors. Nineteen
fell to their deaths in the elevatorshaft while trying to escape the fire. More than twenty workers
would die when the overloaded fire escapes collapsed beneath their feet, sending them falling to

Introduction I chose to focus on how the use of questioning strategies in a whole class setting
improves student understanding of conic sections because I struggle with using open ended
questioning. I see how yes and no questions do not usually cause students to think, since the answer
to the question is often in the question. However, from my own experience as a teacher, simply
asking an open ended question about a new topic can cause frustration. If the students do not
have any idea of how to answer the question, they simply stare and look confused. Even so, I do
believe that open ended questions can be very beneficial as an aid to learning if they are asked
properly.
