Fashion photography is a genre focused on showcasing clothing and accessories. It is commonly used for advertisements and fashion magazines. The earliest popular form of photography was the daguerreotype in the 1830s, but it was not suitable for mass production. In 1856, one of the first fashion photographs was published showing the Countess diCastiglion in her official court garb. In the early 20th century, advances in printing allowed fashion photos to be featured in magazines, helping the genre emerge. Richard Avedon further transformed fashion photography in the post-World War II era with his modern images of women.

Fashion photography is frequently conducted for advertisements, fashion magazine, or modeling portfolios. Over the course of time, this genre of photography has developed its own aesthetic in which the clothes and fashions are improved by the presence of exotic locations and accessories.
- 5. Photography was formed in the 1830’s, but the earliest popular method, the daguerreotype, was inappropriate for mass production. In 1856, Adolphe Braun published a book consisting of about 200+ of photographs of Virginia Oldoini, Countess diCastiglion, a Tuscan noblewoman at the court of Napoleon III. The image portray her in her official court garb, making her the first fashion model.
