This presentation was produced for Tennessee College of Law's Agriculture Law & Policy Symposium in October 2015 and gives an overview of a myriad of direct farm marketing issues, principally Community Supported Agriculture Agreements and volunteer farm labor. It also gives an overview of direct farm marketing statistics and looks at the USDA Census of Agriculture on local food.
The presentation will give a brief overview of the 'UrbanFarmer' project and its various facets, including the integration of a cohort of Norwegian farmers and agricultural research organisations in the co-production of applied knowledge.
The main thrust of the presentation will be to present similarities and differences in the way that food in short food supply chains is marketed through different farm enterprise business models, and different sales channels. Differences in policy backdrops and other, related, contexts which help or hinder urban marketing through short food supply chains concluding with some ideas of emerging recommendations will also be explored.
Dr Anna Birgitte Milford is a researcher at Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, working on topics related to sustainable food production and consumption, including organic/pesticide reduced fruit and veg production, local sales channels and climate friendly diets. She was a visiting scholar at CCRI, University of Gloucestershire in autumn 2021 conducting field research on urban agriculture and local sales channels in Bristol.
Dr Dan Keech is a Senior Research Fellow at CCRI, University of Gloucestershire. His research topics cover European urban and alternative food networks, Anglo-German cultural geography and trans-disciplinary methods which link art and social science.

The presentation was prepared and delivered in occasion of the International Symposium on Agroecology in China, held in Kunming, China on 29-31 August 2016.
While small scale family farmers grow food, and produce 70% of the food in this region, we remain to be poorest, hungriest, mostmalnourished? Why ? First because many of us do not have adequate access , control or ownership of the basic natural resources needed to do farming: land, waters, forests, seeds. Without land rights, we cannot decide what to plant, when to plant, where to market the produce, and in many cases, get only a 30% share of the produce of the farm. Without water rights, the fishes we could have captured in our seas and waters are first captured by big commercial trawlers, leaving so little for the many of us who would like to fish. Without forestry rights, we lose our forests to big mining and logging companies. Without rights to breed, conserve, save and exchange seeds, we will be dependent on the seeds of big and multi-national seed companies..
Second, our yields are low, of inferior quality, and we do not have the money to buy necessary inputs such as seeds, fertilizers or even farm tools or put up needed services such as irrigation, electricity.

9. Review of Hungarian family farming regulations
• The whole regulation of family farming is currently under review in Hungary that
extends to
– tax policy,
– land policy,
– civil law and
– support policy.
• The main aim is to strengthen small farmers/family farmers that may contribute to
increase their negotiating power: more weight in contract negotiations, ensuring fair
terms and conditions, gaining access to public and larger scale markets.
• Possible tools:

– Specialised supports
– Diversification

11. What is Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs)?
• Generating increased policy interest, entrepreneurial activity
and civil society engagement over recent years.
• Potential to improve farm incomes, promote sustainable
farming systems and contribute to local economic
development.
• Common characteristic: reduced numbers of intermediaries
between the farmer or food producer, and the consumer.
Short supply chain’ means a supply chain involving a limited number of economic
operators, committed to co-operation, local economic development, and close
geographical and social relations between producers, processors and consumers.

• For modernisation we need capital and first of all knowledge-
transfer to be sustainable.
