The agency that our group visited is Bob Rumball for the
Deaf at 2395 Bayview Avenue, Toronto. This agency had a
great impact on me because this is the only agency that
offers child support programs for children who are deaf
and hard of hearing. The family resource centre helps the
children and parents to socialized and also learn American
Sign Language. The staffs offer emotional support and
social connections to the families. Bob Rumball offers
different services to all deaf and hard of hearing person.
Bob Rumball for the Deaf also offers workshops on
understanding what hearing loss and educates the child or
families about the hearing aid technology. Bob Rumball
work simultaneously with the other organizations such as
Infant Hearing Program, Toronto District School Board,
Toronto Catholic School Board, Silent Voice, Provincial
School Branch, and Hands & Voices.com. The staffs will
help the families to connect to the different outreach
programs and avail the services offered.

Based on the presentation I have learned that many
families are also facing some issues regarding community
services. Some agencies have no access to health/dental
insurance. There is a long waiting list to access affordable
housing and childcare subsidies. Applicants are screen
according to their income, education like fluency in
English. There is also some problems on the location of the
agency, some have only one location and not very
convenient to the affected families. Evaluating the
advantages and disadvantages the agency offers, I think
they have more advantages that make these agencies very
helpful to the community. The presence of these different
agencies had a great impact on the lives of the people
especially those who have a particular problem like teen
parents, divorced, abused children, deaf and hard of
hearing, newcomers and etc. These agencies offer
emotional, physical, financial, educational supports to the
families. Most are non-profit organizations funded by
private sectors and donations.

We as a global citizen and future Early Childhood
Educators, we have the responsibility to support families
during their transitions to work towards a better place to
live and have a healthy families. We will help them to live a
normal life. As future ECE’s we will be the teachers of the
children, to guide them to become good citizens.

This assignment gave us a lot of information on the
different agencies that are available in the community to
support the families.
