False Dilemma
Hafiz Ijaz Ahmad
Roll No # 23.
Definition
False Dilemma.
A limited number of options (usually two) is
given, while in reality there are more options.
Also known as the either or fallacy.
Picture Analogy
This cartoon is
showing how this
man can go one of
two ways and
those are the only
two choices he
has. When in
reality, he could
actually have
fulfillment and
wealth when
enough effort is put
forward.
Universal Example
America, love it or leave it!
This widely known phrase recognized by many
Americans is presenting two options and that is it.
Saying you have to love America or you have to
leave. There is no mention of being able to change
ways in America to improve or anything of that sort.
It’s only simply stating love everything about it or
get out, which is not logical.
Example # 1
• Act 1
• Speaker: Parris
• "You will confess yourself or I will take you out and
whip you to your death, Tituba!"
• This is an example of false dilemma in The Crucible
because Parris is giving Tituba only two choices so
if she don't want to get whipped to death then she
will have to confess whether or not she was
involved in witchcraft or not.
Example # 2
• Act 3
• Pg. 213
• Speaker: Danforth
• "But you must understand, sir, that a person is either
with this court or he must be counted against it, there is
no road between."
• This is also an example of False Dilemma in The
Crucible because Danforth is giving an either or
decision. That your either with the court or your not.
                      Example # 2
• Act 3
• Pg. 213
• Speaker: Danforth
• "But you must understand, sir, that a person is either
with this court or he must be counted against it, there is
no road between."
• This is also an example of False Dilemma in The
Crucible because Danforth is giving an either or
decision. That your either with the court or your not.
