Facilities Plan 
Ashley Barnard 
FRIT 7132
School Description 
• The school I have chosen is Woodbine Elementary in Camden County Georgia. 
The school has approximately 350 students, 20 regular education teachers, 2 
EIP teachers, and 3 special education teachers. Woodbine Elementary is 
located in the rural part of our county. Students are predominately Caucasian 
and African American with a few Hispanic and Asian students per grade level. 
• The library is currently located at the center of the school. There is one 
certified media specialist and one media clerk that run the library. 
Occasionally they have student and parent volunteers to help with checking 
books in/out and reshelf books. The library is open between 7:30-3:30 each 
day to provide time before and after school for students to check out books. 
• The school participates in the AR program for grades 2-5. For students in 
grades Pre-K-1 we have a reading program called “Dr. Jack Christmas Read 
Aloud Club” to promote literacy in the earlier grades. Students are given a 
reading log each month to fill out as they or their parents read books. The 
students who read at least ten books, or have parents read at least ten books 
per month are given a free book at the end of the month.
Facilities Layout and Analysis 
• Surveys were given to both students and teachers 
regarding the ease of use of the library and what 
features they would like to see in the library. 50 
surveys were given out (20 to teachers and 30 to 
students), only 5 teachers responded and all 
students did as they were given them in class. 
• The consensus was the library facility is not easy 
to for teacher or students and some students 
suggested they would like to have a quiet area to 
read in the library.

Non-fiction section is on the back wall 
and the paperback non-fiction books 
are on the backside of the shelf with 
the paperback fiction books. 
To the right is a picture of the fiction 
books, the shelf in the front is the 
paperback fiction section. These books 
are organized by AR reading level.
Current area for story time 
• The current story 
time area is small 
and doesn’t provide 
a cozy environment. 
The area includes a 
smartboard as well 
as computer 
stations and is not 
devoted strictly to 
story time.
Student work areas 
The tables are not located where the 
students can sit as a class unless they are 
sent in to learn as small groups. The 
biggest group of tables has seating for 16, 
but our class sizes are over 20.
Check in and Check out stations 
The circulation desk allows easy 
access for students checking 
books in and out. Students have 
their own barcode that they scan 
first then checkout their books. 
Students also check their books 
in as they return them. The 
media clerk is available in the 
library if there are any problems 
and can assist students with 
anything. This allows the clerk to 
be on the floor assisting other 
students instead of behind the 
counter the entire time.

Revised Floor Plan Costs 
• Most changes are re-arranging 
and adding a 
computer lab. The computer 
lab will need computer 
stations, computers, and 
chairs. The area will be bright 
and colorful including 
different colored chairs. 
• Another change is adding an 
additional round table into 
the main part of the library to 
create a place for a whole 
class to sit.

Cost of the round table: $434.99, Cost for new tables in the computer lab: $300.00 
per station (2 students) need 14, total $4200, Cost for Chairs: $75.00 each, total 
$2100
Revised Story Time Area 
• For the story time area 
I would remove the 
computer stations and 
move the smartboard 
to a wall where more 
students can see it. I 
would add pillows to 
the area to give 
students something 
more comfortable to sit 
on and relax.

Changes to shelving books 
• I have made a change to the way the books 
are shelved. The current plan has paperback 
books separate from hardcover books causing 
students and teachers to search multiple 
spaces for books. I have implemented placing 
all fiction books on the same shelves in 
alphabetical order by author and all nonfiction 
books on the same shelves by category.
Relevant Policies 
• Unfortunately the current board policies do not 
cover relevant information. The board policies 
are provided below in a link and they basically 
state the superintendent and media committees 
can develop procedures for the library. Also the 
committee is responsible to meet annually and 
come up with an improvement plan for the media 
center.

Additional Policies Needed 
• I feel that many policies should be adopted at our 
board level in order to maintain a balanced 
school system effort. 
• Media Specialists should be required to work 
with other media specialists in the county and 
maintain facilities in similar ways. 
• I also feel that the committee deciding how the 
facility will be managed should conduct surveys 
throughout the year to have input of teachers 
and students. Without the input of patrons it will 
be difficult to help the center.
