Wheeler County Middle/High School Facility Plan Marsha Veal FRIT 7132 Dr. Repman October 28, 2009
WCM/HS Media Center Profile Serves the Middle and High Schools of Wheeler County Currently serves a combined total of approximately 675 students. Serves a total of 50 faculty members. Supervised by two half-time Media Specialists and one half-time paraprofessional.
Location of Media Center The media center is located at the front of the Middle and High School. It is situated at the junction of the Middle and High school halls. The doors on each side are going into the MC from the High school and the Middle school halls.
View from Middle School Hall The entry way from the Middle School hall is decorated more than the entry way from the High School hall. It catches the attention of the Middle School students. The bulletin board reads: “Who doesn’t like to read? Choose good books and read!”
View from the High School Hall The entry way from the High School hall is not as decorated as the Middle School entry.
Media Center Current Floor Plan
Media Center Circulation Desk The circulation desk is located at the front of the Media Center. From this point in the Media Center, the media specialist can see everything that is going on.
The Media Specialist’s Office The MS office has windows on two walls which allows for viewing the activity in the media center. Inside the MS office, there is just enough room for the desk and two chairs.
Seating Areas There are seven adult sized tables with chairs that make up the seating area. These tables are also used for faculty meetings.
Computer Lab The computer lab, which is a room located inside the media center, contains six computers, printers, and a scanner. These computers are for student use and also for the high school students that are taking online classes through NovaNet.
Computer Areas There are three different computer areas that have a total of seven computers. They are located in three different areas. One set is by the computer lab, the other two sets are beside each other by the bookshelves. There is also a SmartBoard.
Work Areas This work area is joining the MS office. There are many cabinets for storage and a copy machine. This room is at the back of the library. It contains the Ellison machine and the laminating machine. It also stores magazines and newspapers.
Storage Areas These pictures are of the same room. This room is mainly for teacher supplies. In this room, you will find bulletin board paper, construction paper, boxes of pens, markers, sticky notes, paper, book carts, over head projectors, and other miscellaneous items. Our school supplies the teachers with necessary supplies because the teachers do not get supplements in this county.
Another Storage Area Because of the school installing new cameras in all rooms and hallways, the TV's, old computer parts, and carts are being stored in the hallway leading outside. There is a lot of work being done in the AV room.
AV Room These pictures are of the AV room. This room houses all of the electrical wiring for the school. It also contains a variety of videos for teachers to use in their classrooms.
Conference Room The conference room is located beside the computer lab. It is a room that is used for parent conferences and other meetings with only a few people. Testing is also done in this room.
Book Arrangement These shelves contain the fiction and nonfiction books. The nonfiction books are closest to this side and the fiction books are on the far side.
Book Display Areas The MS does a good job displaying books in the media center. There are two display tables and the books are changed every month.
Newspaper and Periodical Area There is a small section on the back wall for newspapers and magazines. There is also a stand for pamphlets on career choices at the nearby technical college.
Reference Section These reference books are located along the wall of the conference room. These books can be used but not checked out of the library.
Negative Survey Responses Student Responses Not many high level books that are not for high school students No soft reading areas Old books Not enough computers Books are not interesting
Positive Survey Responses Student Responses Allowed to keep books for three weeks Good organization Peaceful and calm environment Computers are high speed
Negative Survey Responses Teacher Responses Need higher level books for Middle School students More room for handicapped children Need more computers
Positive Survey Responses Teacher Responses Enough room for entire class Smartboard available High speed computers
Media Center Improvements Problem: No soft seating areas Suggestion for improvement: Purchase small bean bags and pillows to place in a corner that is always visible.
Media Center Improvements Problem: Old books or books with low reading levels Suggestion for improvement: Purchase newer books with higher reading levels (may need to conduct a fundraiser to help)
Media Center Improvements Problem: Not enough computers for an entire class Suggestion for Improvement: Purchase more computers
Revised Media Center Floor Plan I made the teacher workroom smaller. I created a soft seating area to read. I added three computers to the main floor. I made the computer lab larger and added another computer. I turned all of the computers around so the monitors could be visible from the circulation desk.
