Regions of the Library
Teen Room
• 4 comfortable chairs
with a small table
• 2 café chairs with high
top table
• Tall bookshelves with
high-interest books on
display
Reading Area
• 4 cushioned chairs
• Colorful rug
• 1 rocking chair
Tall display shelf with
award-winning books
Nonfiction books on
low shelves accessible
by everyone
Fiction books on low
shelves with feature
books and series on top
of the shelves
Instructional Area
• Repositionable tables to fit one whole class
• Promethean touchscreen board
• Laptops can be used at the tables; there aren’t any desktop
computers
• Electrical outlets are on the wall under the board
*Special note on seating:
The instructional area is the only
place to sit in the media center
to work on the laptops. If there is
a class there for instruction other
students do not have a place to
sit and work.
This area is also used for faculty
meetings, but there aren’t
enough seats for all of the
teachers. Many teachers stand
for the duration of the meeting or
sit on the floor.
Additional seating would help to
meet the needs of everyone.
Wireless access is available in
the media center and throughout
the entire school.
Several online resources
are available to teachers
and students at school
and home.
Virtual and Technological Elements
IPads are stationed throughout
the media center for catalog
searches.
Computers are stationed at the
circulation desk for self-
checkout.
The school district web filtering
software blocks inappropriate
content and sometimes blocks
educational content. A request
can be made to have educational
sites unblocked.
Work Areas (not for students)
Media Specialist’s office
• Windows with view of media center
• Large desk and comfortable chair
• Adequate shelving
• Locking door
• Rarely used
Audio-Visual Room
• Resources don’t appear to be
catalogued
• Tall shelves available
• Teacher curriculum resources
available on the shelf
• Work in progress-this room has
become a dumping ground for
miscellaneous items.
Environment
• Plenty of large windows for natural light and good overhead lighting creates a bright and
cheerful environment
• Most electrical outlets are located near Promethean board and on the wall near the reading
area.
• All cords are out of the way
• Very few internet ports, but Wi-Fi is available
• Sign identifying fiction section
• Laptops available to be used at 1 table
• Printer available behind circulation desk with sign stating fees
Accessibility
The C.T.W media center was remodeled Summer 2016 creating a more accessible
library with short shelves that can be easily reached by everyone. Taller shelves are
used for book displays. Spacing between the shelves and table is more than adequate
for wheelchair accessibility.
Suggestion
Create a space for our autistic students that is away from the busyness of the
circulation desk and instructional area.
What is
CT Walker Media Center?
about the
• Newly remodeled, the media center is bright and clean.
• The bookshelves are well organized, easily accessed by all students, and contain
empty space so that the books are easy to remove from the shelves. The award-
winning book displays are attractive and inviting.
• It’s comfortable! There is comfortable seating for the younger students and the older
students.
• The décor is welcoming and not overwhelming.
• The circulation desk is centrally located and is set up for self-checkout.
• The reading/story time are is large enough for 1-2 classes.
• The tables in the instructional area can be shifted and grouped in different
configurations.
• Signage…there is only a “fiction” sign. More signs are needed to identify nonfiction,
genres, award-winning, and high interest books.
• More seating is needed so that when a class is in the media center for instruction there
is still a place to sit for students needing to use the laptops to work on projects. A
dedicated computer work station would help meet this need.
• More electrical outlets located near seating areas for easy charging of laptops.
• The audio-visual room is in the midst of a transformation and needs to be cleaned up
and organized. It is difficult to access any materials in this room.
• Although the media center has just been remodeled, the environment is not as
conducive to learning as it could be. The tables and Promethean board are directly in
front of the door, so every time someone walks in the door the whole class turns to look
at whomever has walked in, disrupting instruction. Moving the tables to the side of the
room and shifting the fiction bookshelves over would take care of this problem.
