OpenFaaS (Functions as a Service) is a framework for building serverless functions with Docker which has first class support for metrics. Any process can be packaged as a function enabling you to consume a range of web events without repetitive boiler-plate coding.

The New York Times’ is a US media company serves digital journalism to millions of visitors every day. The format of our stories is constantly experimented with; for example we publish graphics based on election data ingested from APIs, question and answer led discussions, breaking news live coverage, and quizzes. This leads to a lot of applications.
Our previous experience with infrastructure may be a familiar one: an unruly number of virtual machines, which led us to containers. Containers give our web developers who are not infrastructure engineers the opportunity to configure and launch their applications with little oversight.
Kubernetes offers us an infrastructure for our numerous applications at scale. Leveraging the Kubernetes API, we’ve built a self-service admin interface for developers (not sysadmins) to configure and launch their applications at scale, similar to the Kubernetes Dashboard project, tailored to our development workflow.

Project Calico is a scale-out networking fabric for bare metal, container, VM, and hybrid environments. Project Calico leverages the same networking techniques used to scale out the Internet to present a highly scaleable, L3 network for those environments without the use of tunnels, overlays, or other complex constructs. We'll also do a demo of a Calico enabled Docker environment, and have plenty of time for q&a during and after.

Christopher is the original architect of Project Calico and one of the project's evangelists. In his day job, he's the director of solutions architecture at Metaswitch Networks. Prior to Calico/Metaswitch, he's designed and run some bio-informatics OpenStack clusters, done some SDN architecture work at Big Switch Networks, Run architecture at two large carriers (Telstra - AS1221, and Cable & Wireless/iMCI - AS3561) and been the IP CTO for Alcatel in Asia. CNCF Intro & Demo - OpenFaaS framework
OpenFaaS is a serverless framework that allows users to build and deploy containerized functions. It provides an easy way to deploy stateless container functions that scale horizontally. OpenFaaS grew from an idea to run Lambda functions on containers and has since expanded to support Kubernetes and external providers. It aims to provide portability, ease of use, simplicity and avoid vendor lock-in while leveraging existing Docker skills.
Practical PaaS presentation
This document discusses the evolution of Intalio's software deployment approach from bare metal servers to Platform as a Service (PaaS). It describes how Intalio initially deployed software on their own servers (DIY), which led to scaling issues. They then moved to Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) on AWS, but still faced complexity issues. Intalio then adopted PaaS using Cloud Foundry for "NoOps", allowing them to focus on development instead of operations. IBM has worked to port Netflix's open source Scalable Services Fabric framework to run on IBM's cloud infrastructure. This includes making Netflix services and microservice runtimes compatible with IBM SoftLayer IaaS and WebSphere Liberty application server. IBM also adopted Netflix's chaos testing and continuous delivery practices to validate cloud-native readiness. Libnetwork updates
Libnetwork, Docker's networking plugin, has updated to be compatible with the Container Network Interface (CNI) specification used by Kubernetes. Libnetwork drivers can now be used as CNI plugins without changes to the CNM object model or Libnetwork core. This allows full integration with Kubernetes networking and use of Libnetwork's various networking drivers like bridge, overlay, and MacVlan through the CNI interface.
CRI-containerd
This document discusses CRI-Containerd, which is a CRI implementation that allows Kubernetes to use Containerd as its container runtime. It provides an overview of CRI and how it enables Kubernetes to work with different runtimes. It then discusses how Containerd's scope aligns well with CRI's requirements. LinuxKit
LinuxKit is a toolkit for building secure, portable, and lean container-based operating systems. Over the past six months, it has gained 75 contributors and seen improvements like support for additional platforms, TPM support, immutable images, and newer kernel versions. Looking ahead, the next six months will focus on stable releases when Containerd 1.0 is available, using LinuxKit as the basis for Docker desktop and cloud editions, and expanding Kubernetes integration and production usage. The LinuxKit Security SIG has also deep dived several security projects and aims to contribute further to upstream Linux security.
Notary - container signing
The Notary project has officially been accepted in to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). It has moved to https://github.com/theupdateframework/notary. Any downstream consumers should update their Go imports to use this new location, which will be the canonical location going forward.
We have moved the repo in GitHub, which will allow existing importers to continue using the old location via GitHub's redirect.
Declare your infrastructure: InfraKit, LinuxKit and Moby
InfraKit is a toolkit for infrastructure orchestration. With an emphasis on immutable infrastructure, it breaks down infrastructure automation and management processes into small, pluggable components. These components work together to actively ensure the infrastructure state matches the user's specifications. InfraKit therefore provides infrastructure support for higher-level container orchestration systems and can make your infrastructure self-managing and self-healing.

Using linuxKit to build custom rancherOS systems
This document discusses modernizing RancherOS, a micro Linux distribution. It describes replacing System Docker with runC and Containerd to reduce size and improve performance. Through iterative changes like removing unused files, generating container specs, and customizing services, the initrd size was reduced from 245MB to 190MB and boot time from 30 seconds to 12 seconds. The final version can boot and serve HTTP requests within 7 seconds while maintaining compatibility with RancherOS.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
